What did you see today? Was it the sunrise or sunset, the face of a lover, an eagle soaring overhead catching thermals or a person who caught your eye and with whom you shared a brief moment. What did you hear? Was it a beautiful piece of music, your child's laughter or the whispered word from the love of your life? What did you touch today? A parent in a loving embrace, did you hold a door for a stranger or feel the hand of your partner slip into yours as you walked.
Maybe you saw, heard and felt all of that today, maybe only some and possibly even none, but if you're reading this the chances are you had the ability to see, hear and feel all of the above; Your senses I mean. But not every one does - Some simply don't have the ability to do so as one or more of their senses have been taken away or they never had it in the first place. It's a terrible thing to contemplate but that's what I was doing this week.
I had a client tell me a story about how his cousin had permanently lost his vision at the age of nineteen - It made me think about the loss of vision, or of any of my senses for that matter, and how it may impact upon my life; Clearly in a massive way of course.
I decided to do the weekend-engagement topic week 44 about the loss of senses to see what you folks felt about the situation. Following that link back there will take you to the topic if you're keen to get involved. I asked a simple question which people need to answer in the comments of that post.
Sight, hearing or touch which would you lose if you had to lose one.
If I had to lose one of the above senses I'd say hearing would be it. I would miss so many things of course; Music, the sounds of nature, the ocean, wind in the trees, running water, the crunch of the ground beneath my hiking boots...I'd also miss intimate words whispered in my ear from my baby girl, the sound of my niece and nephew laughing and talking...There's so many sounds that I probably take for granted right now as I know I can hear them whenever I like. It would diminish my lifestyle and life-enjoyment.
Losing my sight would be tragic for me as I am such a visual person. Not being able to see beauty, to look in its eyes...I'd probably spiral well out of control to be quite honest. And touch...Never feeling a lovers touch, or feeling my own upon her? No, not something I could do. And so vision and the sense of touch would need to remain.
I'm very grateful to have my senses all in working order and I think, looking at the responses in the #weekend-engagement topic post this week there's a lot of others who are also. It's so easy to take something like this for granted, the ability to see - I mean how many times have you said to yourself, I'm grateful for my sight? For most of us many never, or rarely. But we should be grateful, and never take it for granted I think.
What are your thoughts on the topic? I'd like to hear about it so maybe you'll want to head over to the weekend-engagement topic week 44 and drop your response there for a chance to win some hive, or comment here - Your choice.
