The character of La Llorona is well known in Mexico and among the legends it is still present in the memory of the oldest people in the area. This legend tells that in colonial times every night the bells of the main church sounded the curfew at eleven o'clock. All pedestrians knew that when the bells rang it was a sign of going home. The streets were totally empty and cold in the dark night, some days lit only by the light of the full moon.
Every night after 12 o'clock, they began to hear laments and a pitiful voice that seemed to come from a grieving and disconsolate woman . These cries roamed throughout the city. In the face of such events many remained awake and could no longer reconcile the dream. They wondered who this woman would be that every night she cried complaining sadly and no one let sleep.
Tired of such a circumstance, the bravest took to the streets at midnight to hunt down the woman or person of those sobs. Others crossed themselves in their homes holding a crucifix strongly. They were convinced that these voices were the product of lost souls and not of a human person.
They went with torches looking for the focus of the moans, which were already heard again rumbling through the dark streets.
And suddenly, as if it were an angel, there appeared at the end of an alley a woman with whitish skin. He was dressed in a flowing white suit and his hair was long and deep black. At least what was left between seeing, because he wore a thick veil that covered his entire face.
The ghostly image , after being seen by the villagers for a few minutes, extended its arms and went to the Plaza Mayor where it knelt. Meanwhile, his pitiful voice was still heard.
The neighbors followed her to the plaza and with astonishment watched as that almost transparent woman vanished in the shadows of the night ...
There are many theories about who was that woman, and why her sadness, but the most widespread for the weeping woman is the following.
Many claim that she was an indigenous woman, who was in love with a Spanish nobleman. This woman had three children of the relationship, but the gentleman never wanted to recognize them and less formalize something with her. After a while he married another and she went crazy.
Such was his upheaval that he drowned his three children in the river, and realizing the evil he had done, committed suicide.
Now his soul in pain wanders the streets lamenting for his children.
