The other day I was making repairs at home. There were several and some of them may be interesting to you; besides, the things I did may be useful in case you have to make similar repairs in your home.
Therefore, I will show you, as a tutorial, how I made these repairs in my home. Join me!
El otro día estuve haciendo reparaciones en casa. Fueron varias y algunas les pueden resultar interesantes; además, las cosas que hice les pueden ser de utilidad en caso de que deban hacer reparaciones similares en su hogar.
Por ello, les mostraré, a manera de tutorial, cómo hice estas reparaciones en mi hogar. !Acompáñenme!
Important: if you do not have specific knowledge in these areas of repair, it is advisable to hire an expert. If you do it for the first time, take safety measures and always with supervision.
Broken couch
You see, at home I have a large piece of furniture, a long sofa. I don't use it too much, but precisely because of this disuse, it broke when one day I went to sit down.
When I lifted it up and took a look at the bottom, I realized that one of the wooden pieces had completely burst, as well as a couple of springs it has.
This caused the sofa to sink as soon as someone sat on the left side.
Importante: si no posee conocimientos específicos en estas áreas de reparación, lo recomendable es contratar a un experto. Si lo hace por primera vez, tome las medidas de seguridad y siempre con supervisión.
Mueble roto
Verán, en casa tengo un mueble amplio, un sofá largo. No suelo usarlo demasiado, pero precisamente por este desuso, se reventó cuando cierto día fui a sentarme.
Al levantarlo y darle un vistazo por la parte de abajo, me di cuenta de que una de las piezas de madera se había reventado por completo, al igual que un par de resortes que tiene.
Esto hacía que el sofá se hundiera apenas alguien se sentaba en la parte de la izquierda.
The first thing I did was to cut this white plastic cloth that I had on the bottom, because it was all torn up and it didn't allow me to see if there was a piece of wire sticking up that could cut me. There was one so I pulled it out.
I also tried to stretch the springs as far as I could towards the other end of the wood.
Lo primero que hice fue cortar esta tela blanca de plástico que tenía en la parte de abajo, pues estaba toda destrozada y no me permitía ver si había algún trozo de alambre que saliera hacia arriba y pudiera cortarme. Había uno así que lo saqué.
También traté de estirar los resortes hasta hacerlo llegar lo más posible hacia el otro extremo de la madera.
Since the metal had burst, it would be impossible for me to stretch it to the wood, so I had the idea of using a screw with a hook. I bought this one at the hardware store and used both of them to secure these springs to the wood very well.
Both of them are firm and will prevent the furniture cushion from sinking back in.
Como se había reventado el metal, me sería imposible estirarlo hasta la madera, así que tuve la idea de usar un tornillo con un gancho. Este lo compré en la ferretería los dos los usé para fijar muy bien estos resortes en la madera.
Los dos quedaron firmes y evitarán que el cojín del mueble se vuelva a hundir.
Regarding the split wood, I had to replace it completely. I removed all the wire and clamps that held it in place and cut another similar piece of wood to replace it. In this case it was a red wood, much stronger.
Con respecto a la madera partida, tuve que reemplazarla completamente. Le quité todo el alambre y los clavos que la sujetaban y corté otro trozo de madera similar para su reemplazo. En este caso era una madera roja, mucho más resistente.
Just as the old one was, so was this wood. Not only did it snap into place, but I used a couple of nails and carpenter's glue to give strength to this little wooden beam.
Así como estaba la anterior, así quedó esta madera. No solo calzó a presión en su lugar, sino que usé un par de clavos y pegamento de carpintería para darle fuerza a esta pequeña viga de madera.
To give even more strength to all the springs, I used thin metal rods and interlocked them between all the springs, along the length of the piece of furniture.
I used wire to join all the rods together, as well as the brackets, to form a sort of skeleton to increase the strength of this stand.
Para darle aún más fuerza a todos os resortes, usé delgadas cabillas de metal y las entrelacé entre todos los resortes, a lo largo del mueble.
Usé alambre para unir todas las cabillas entre si, al igual que los soportes, para formar una suerte de esqueleto que aumente la resistencia de este soporte.
This is how the lower part of the cabinet looked. It doesn't look pretty, but it is much more resistant than it was. Sometimes, in this case, the functional is better than the aesthetic, since this part of the furniture is not visible.
Así quedó la parte inferior del mueble. No se ve bonita, pero quedó mucho más resistente a como estaba. A veces, en este caso lo funcional es mejor que lo estético, ya que esta parte del mueble no se ve.
Fixing and painting walls
For some time now I have been fighting against some water filtration problems in my house. I managed to solve them, but the walls were very deteriorated after these works, with patches everywhere and rustic cement here and there.
Arreglar y pintar paredes
Desde hace un tiempo he estado luchando contra unos problemas de filtraciones de agua que hay en mi casa. Estos logré resolverlos, pero las paredes quedaron muy deterioradas después de estos trabajos, con parches por todos lados y cemento rústico por aquí y por allá.
The materials I used to fix and paint these walls were a gallon of Class B paint and a gallon of professional paste.
Professional paste is a material used to correct certain imperfections in a smooth wall.
Los materiales que utilicé para arreglar y pintar estas paredes fueron un galón de pintura Clase B y un galón de pasta profesional.
La pasta profesional es un material que se utiliza para corregir ciertas imperfecciones en una pared lisa.
In my case, I set everything up, left the furniture out of the living room and prepared the paint.
I started painting some areas that were fine, so while the paint was drying in those areas, I started applying the professional paste in other areas that did require it.
En mi caso, preparé todo, dejé los muebles afuera de la sala y preparé la pintura.
Comencé a pintar algunas áreas que estaban bien, así que mientras la pintura secaba en esas áreas, comencé a aplicar la pasta profesional en otras áreas que sí lo requerían.
See for example the two images below. In the image above you can see the wall of the house without any kind of smooth finish. You can see the rustic cement, because this was used to correct the leak that was in the wall.
Well, to give a smooth finish, I applied a thin layer of professional paste with a spatula, and the result is as shown in the image below. You can compare one with the other.
Vean por ejemplo las dos imágenes que les presento a continuación. En la imagen de arriba se ve la pared de la casa sin ningún tipo de acabado liso. Se ve el cemento rústico, pues con este se corrigió la filtración que había en la pared.
Pues bien, para dar un acabado liso, le apliqué una delgada capa de pasta profesional con una espátula, siendo el resultado el que se ve en la imagen de abajo. Pueden comparar una con la otra.
The two images below show the same case, where I had to use professional paste to correct another job that had been done to repair a water leak.

En las dos imágenes a continuación se evidencia el mismo caso, donde tuve que usar pasta profesional para corregir otro trabajo que se había hecho para reparar una filtración de agua.
Pueden comparar un antes y un después de aplicar la pasta profesional y la pintura.
This is how the living room area was left, without furniture, after these simple steps to recover these walls that had deteriorated due to humidity.
Así quedó el área de la sala, sin muebles, después de estos sencillos pasos para recuperar estas paredes que se habían deteriorado por la humedad.
Lamp
Did you see the ceiling lamp in one of the photos above? Well, it burned out after 3 years of use.
I really wanted to change it because the bulbs it uses are not easy to find. So when it burned out, I had the excuse to change it.
Important note. I recommend to remove the electricity from the house before doing this work.
Lámpara
¿Vieron la lámpara del techo que está en una de las fotos más arriba? Pues se quemó después de 3 años de uso.
Tenía muchas ganas de cambiarla porque los bombillos que usa no son del todo fáciles de encontrar. Así que al quemarse, tuve la excusa para cambiarla.
Nota importante. recomiendo quitar la electricidad de la casa antes de hacer estos trabajos.
On the ceiling, near the lamp, was a metal cover that covered this hole in the concrete, which gives access to the wiring.
I had to buy the piece that is in the picture below, the piece on the right. This piece is a piece with a thread, two nuts and a sheet to fix it to a box that is at the bottom of the hole that you see in the image on the left.
En el techo, cerca de la lámpara, estaba una cubierta de metal que cubría este agujero en el concreto, el cual da acceso al cableado.
Tuve que comprar la pieza que está en la imagen a continuación, la pieza de la derecha. Esta pieza es una pieza con rosca, dos tuercas y una lámina para fijarla a un cajetín que está al fondo del agujero que ven en la imagen de la izquierda.
To see it in better detail, look at the image below.
In the image on the right is the box where the cable that gives electricity to the lamp comes out.
It is rusty because of the humidity problem, but it has two supports with holes where you can put some screws (marked with red circles).
Well, the sheet I mentioned before is the one you see in the image below, but in the two on the left.
This sheet can be separated from the complete thread for convenience. In the picture you can see where the screws are placed to fix it in the box.
Para que lo vean con mejor detalle, fíjense den la imagen de abajo.
En la imagen de la derecha está el cajetin de donde sale el cable que da electricidad a la lámpara. Está oxidado por el problema de humedad que había, pero tiene dos soportes con agujeritos donde se pueden meter unos tornillos (marcados con círculos rojos).
Pues bien, la lámina que les mencioné anteriormente es la que ven en la imagen que también está abajo, pero en las dos de la izquierda. Esta lámina se puede separar de la rosca completa para mayor comodidad. En la foto pueden ver donde se colocan los tornillos para fijarlo en el cajetín.
With patience and effort, I managed to fix the sheet I mentioned in place.
Do you see the circle in the center of the sheet? Well, besides being where the central thread of the piece goes, it is also where we must pass the wires that will give current to the lamp.
Con paciencia y esfuerzo, logré fijar la lámina que les mencioné en su lugar.
¿Ven el círculo que tiene la lámina en el centro? Pues bien, además de ser donde va la rosca central de la pieza, es también por donde debemos pasar los cables que darán corriente a la lámpara.
This threaded cylinder is hollow, so those same wires should go inside that cylinder and place it as it was in the sheet that was already fixed in the box.
The last thing to do is to place the lamp cover in the hole in the ceiling and use a nut to fix this cover.
Este cilindro con rosca es hueco, así que esos mismos cables deben ir dentro de ese cilindro y colocarlo tal como iba en la lámina que ya se fijó en el cajetín.
Lo último que se hace es colocar la cubierta de la lámpara en el agujero del techo y usar una tuerca para fijar esta cubierta.
This is how it looked, ready to attach the other pieces of the lamp.
At this point I also added some professional paste to cover some holes and imperfections that were left around the cover; I also took the opportunity to paint the area.
Así quedó, listo para fijar las otras piezas de la lámpara.
En este punto también agregué un poco de pasta profesional para cubrir algunos agujeros e imperfecciones que quedaron alrededor de la cubierta; además, aproveché de pintar el área.
The cute little lamp you see below is the one I plan to put up.
It is not the prettiest or the newest, but it is a lamp with a lot of value for me because it is a lamp that belonged to the family for a long time.
It was given to me by my mom and certainly this lamp is more than 30 years old, it is older than me.
La simpática lamparita que ven a continuación es la que pienso colocar.
No es la más bonita ni la más nueva, pero es una lámpara con mucho valor para mi porque es una lámpara que perteneció a la familia por mucho tiempo.
Me la dio mi mamá y ciertamente esta lámpara tiene más de 30 años, es más vieja que yo.
It comes with a small but handy bracket. This must be screwed onto the bracket that has already been fixed.
Then, the lamp has a ring similar to that of a key ring with which it is joined to this support with the rest of the lamp.
Trae un pequeño pero práctico soporte. Este se debe enroscar en el soporte que ya se fijó.
Luego, la lámpara tiene una argolla similar a la de un llavero con la cual se une a este soporte con el resto de la lámpara.
The latter is the easiest, considering what has been done before. Just join the wires together, cover them with tape and attach the bulbs.
Lo último es lo más fácil, considerando lo que se ha hecho antes. Solo hay que unir los cables, cubrirlos con cinta y colocar los bombillos.
Very important, as I said at the beginning, I recommend to do this electrical work with the house lights off. That is to say, that there is no electricity running through the wires. You know, to avoid accidents.
But once everything is ready, turn on the light and let the lamp illuminate everything.
Muy importante, tal como lo dije al comienzo, estos trabajos de electricidad yo recomiendo hacerlos con la luz de la casa apagada. Es decir, que no haya electricidad corriendo por los cables. Ya saben, para evitar accidentes.
Pero una vez que todo esté listo, a encender la luz y que la lámpara ilumine todo.
Well, after painting, arranging and placing the lamp, this is how this area that serves as living room and foyer in my house looked like.
