People are definitely controlled by fear that the television puts into their heads.

Recently I invited a lady over for dinner, and she politely declined saying "I prefer a man takes me out to dinner on the first date because I'm worried that a man might try to poison me in his home." Despite being recommended by a mutual friend who she said she trusts and that person has ate my home cooked meals too. It amounted to an embarrassment for everyone involved in the match making.

I know this is a bit off the topic here, but it caught my attention when you mentioned the fear control factor, it hits close to home when people are constantly afraid that strangers are going to try to kill them.
