Yes that is a excellent observation! I have indeed noticed this and have plenty of "where the heck is the stairwell in this building?" memories. Seeing as though we can identify an "out of sight out of mind" phenomenon, it kind of gives credence to intelligent design with a purpose.

It get's even crazier if you're in a shopping mall and hear people conversing over which ride makes them look cooler, the elevator or escalator. I'm pretty sure the consensus was elevators are more upper class.
