While watching random videos to gain knowledge, I came across the video of a parrot lover who just introduced a new parrot to others, and according to him, this particular pet was showing some signs that he had to seek the help of a professional for, it turned out it was an infection of Aspergillosis. Aspergillosis holds a lot of detail as long as human and veterinary medicine are concerned, but in this post, I will make it as relatable and understandable as possible.

Aspergillosis is the main type of mycosis that affects mammals, humans, and birds. It is a fungal infection known to cause respiratory diseases in pet birds, when it strikes, it will cause both upper and lower respiratory tract diseases. The upper respiratory tract includes the eye, nose, sinuses, and trachea while the lower respiratory tract involves the air sacs and the lungs. Aspergillus, is the fungus that causes aspergillosis, it is a slow-growing fungal infection that damages the tissue in the respiratory tract gradually or other internal organs within the space of a week or months, it usually shows up with little evidence of illness until it gets to a point of complete compromise to the system or the specific organ affected.

Aspergillus fungus can exist in different environments, as microscopic spores, particularly in nesting materials, in the soil, and in moldy folds, the spores conveniently persist in the environment and remain resistant to disinfection. While Aspergillus remains an environmental contaminant, it is not contagious from one bird to another, it is common to affect birds who have a compromised immune system from other existing diseases or a form of malnutrition. Birds that have a healthy immune system may be exposed to the spores of Aspergillus and still not develop any form of infection, but when birds even in their most healthy state are exposed to large numbers of spores, then there is a possibility of an infection occurring.

Infection in birds may not come with any specific symptom or sign especially in its early stages, but occasionally, tail bobbing, coughing and breathing difficulty may also be noticed, at this point, the bird may be fluffed, listless, and lose weight.

The Treatment for Aspergillosis in Birds.

There is currently no treatment available for an infected bird, most of the routines tried out are often basically ineffective but spontaneous recovery is possible, and even at that, re-exposure to mold is highly possible but could be prevented.
Available safety routines include; taking out the birds from an environment that is contaminated, removing contaminated materials to prevent further exposure, then pet owners should avoid using the same item used for contaminated birds for the uncontaminated ones, compliance to severe adherence to disinfection and cleaning procedure should also be done for such cleaning environment.

Aspergillosis affecting humans.

As we have correctly stated that Aspergillosis can exist as microscopic spores in the environment, which means that humans can also be exposed to the infection. In humans, there are different categories of infection;

  • Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis, often affects those with cystic fibrosis or asthma.
  • Aspergillomas affect those who have a lung disease like tuberculosis.
  • Chronic pulmonary aspergillosis, affects people with other lung disease cases asides from tuberculosis.
  • Invasive aspergillosis affects those who have a weak immune system.

Humans can contract aspergillosis by simply breathing in microscopic Aspergillus spores available in the environment. A lot of people breathe in Aspergillus spores daily without any feeling of sickness. However, with the presence of lung disease or a weak immune system, there is a higher chance of developing heart problems as a result of Aspergillus.
It is difficult to say we are going to avoid breathing in Aspergillus spores, and this is because the fungus is readily found in the environment, for those with a weak immune system, who have no other choice than to find a way to protect themselves, then these tips could help;

  • Protect yourself from the environment, and what this means is, you need to avoid areas filled with dust or put on a face mask or respirator whenever you are visiting these areas.

  • Avoid yard work or gardening, or protect your body completely in the process, if unavoidable.

  • Health care specialists could prescribe anti-fungal medications for you when they notice you stand a high chance of developing invasive aspergillosis.

  • Detecting this infection on time is also highly helpful as possible treatment will help savage terrible consequences, so watch out for symptoms like fever, noisy breathing, shortage of breath, and cough which will make the expert run a blood test on you and then rule out or rule in the possibility of the infection.

CONCLUSION.

Aspergillosis is no joke as it affects humans, mammals, and birds, and because they are found in the environment, they can attack at any time they desire. While in some cases, there is a strong immune system to fight it, others are unfortunately not so lucky. However, early detection is a good thing and a good way to prevent horrible complications.
