It is 7:35 AM on a Sunday morning in Nigeria.
I came out to my small veranda in Enugu to fetch water, and I heard the birds singing first before I saw them.
Not one, not two but a full choir. On the NEPA wire, on the mango tree behind our compound, on the zinc of the neighbour's house. They were singing like they were paid to lead praise and worship.

No keyboard.
No drummer.
No microphone.
Just pure, raw praise to their creator.

And while they were praising, humans were busy doing different things that concerns them.

Nnenna one of our neighbours, was already sweeping her compound, her wrapper tied, broom making that early morning sound, shwa shwa shwa as she is sweeping around her environment.

The okada man opposite was kicking his bike gbim! gbim! gbim, trying to start the bike so he can go and hustle for Sunday money.

Two small boys were running with their Bible, white shirt not well ironed, late for the church worker's meeting.

And me, I just stood there with my water rubber, watching this drama of creation.

That was when it hit me so hard.

The birds have no rent to pay.
They have no school fees.
They have no data to buy.
They did not check Hive price before singing.
They just woke up and did what they were created to do which is to sing.

But we humans, we woke up and start worrying immediately. We woke up and check our social media spaces. We woke up and start calculating how to survive next week. We forget to praise our creator first.

Jesus said it and I quote, look at the birds of the air, they neither sow nor reap but yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Matthew 6:26.

If God wakes up every morning and tunes the birds to sing, will He not take care of you who is posting on Hive today, who is hustling in Port Harcourt or Enugu or Lagos?

Today's early Sunday morning taught me 3 things which are,

  1. Praise should be our first activity, not our last.
Birds don't wait till they eat before they sing. They sing first. We should thank God first, before we ask for anything. Gratitude is the breakfast of champions.

  2. Everyone has their own assignment.
The bird's job is to sing. The okada man's job is to ride. The mother's job is to sweep. The child's job is to go to church. Don't compare your Sunday morning with another man's own. Just do your own part well.

  3. Nature never misses Sunday service.
Humans will say I am tired, I will not go to church today. But have you ever seen birds say that they l are tired, we will not sing today, never. Creation is more faithful than we are.
After my experience with the birds, I went home and said a short prayer to my creator.
No long prayer. Just thank you.

If you are reading this now, wherever you are, please pause. Listen. Even if you are in the city where there are no birds, there is still air blowing, still light coming through your window. That is creation singing to you.

Happy Sunday from Enugu. Let us praise like the birds.
