Today is a good day. It’s only 9:17 am but I already know. Just like I know 2018 will be a great year. How can I know this? Because I have made a decision to do what I want to do - in a major way. I’ve spent years preparing and planning and working through fears and doubts and setbacks but now it’s time to fucking take the leap and GO!!
I’ll be moving with my 8 year-old son to a lovely warm island in less than one month. Do I have a storehouse of money saved up? Nope. Family trust fund? Hella crypto? Not yet but hopefully one day if it all works out. :)
What I do have is balls, basically. Put less crudely, I’m willing to do stuff that many, dare I say most people won’t do. I’m taking my child out of his fantastic school mid-year, leaving my burgeoning entertainment law practice, though I will continue to build on the momentum I have remotely and otherwise, and we’re going to live a live that I’ve long dreamed of. What’s the big deal?
I’m multilingual, he’s been in a fancy Spanish immersion school for nearly 5 years so he’s good to go. I’ve got a crapload of education and talent and guts, I suppose, and as far as I can tell, only one life like this. And I wanna live it. So we’re out.
Next few weeks will be about getting stuff ready: emptying out storage, selling my car, sorting through clothes to take/donate, etc. And in case you’re wondering, this is not a sight unseen leap. I’ve been to my island happy place before. It is a small, quaint little nook on a larger island with more well-known attractive places for tourists. There are expats where I’m headed just not hoardes, thank goodness. It’s lovely and mellow and affordable (what a relief that will be after seeing my beloved San Francisco Bay Area blow up economically and become a struggle financially for so many people, shame). Anyway, we were on the island a couple summers ago when I taught at a university in a biggish city. Cool experience with lots of fun travel to other spots near and far in the region. I went again a couple months ago at the tail end of a business trip and confirmed that yep, I could live here for a while. So why not? Life is busy and hectic sometimes and people dream daily of shit many never do. And like I said, I’ve worked and planned (to the best of my ability, it ain’t perfect) and I am confident that we’ll be fine.
I’ve got a job teaching at the school where my son will attend and plans to do other interesting work - and I’m hopeful that life will be amazing and delightful. The reward for the risk well worth taking. Cross your fingers, say a prayer, send good vibes. Time to make it happen. Wishing you all similar courage and freedom and sweet rewards. Do good and do it well! xoxo Peace.
