I love when they speak to me. When I tell people that the steel speaks to me, it is true. The steel has a shape and it all becomes something special once you start.
Once I start to file the steel and I can see its grain, I know what to do. Each piece that I work with has a specific length. You can only create within the length that you have. So it really helps the creation process...just use what you have.
When I get it prepped I always take some time to just look at it. Once I start to get the feel for what it may become I start to doodle and draw with a soap stone.
I can use the stone to draw out what I think I want. It is great though because I can wipe it off and redraw it.
Once I have it all layed out, I use a sharpie to lay out the lines. That way when I start to grind and shape it I will stay inside of my idea. It takes no time at all to start grinding like crazy and end up with a really jacked up blade.
I started to get this one shaped out and sanded a bit before the dinner bell rang. I will jump back into it on Sunday and see what it will become!
