Yesterday my lovely bride Stacie D (@freedomtowrite) and I hosted a wonderful radio show for Inner Blocks. Inner Blocks is a community that is built with a focus on individuals owning their experience...that is...their life. We hope to encourage many people around the world to live their lives and create amazing content about it.
During the show we were talking with some people from the audience and the subject of #newsteem came up. Steem is the blockchain that we primarily create content on. We are rewarded for our efforts through support from other people through upvotes..and now downvotes.
Recently there was a Hardfork on the Steem blockchain. It was hardfork 21 and 22. One of the changes is that it now allows for "free" downvotes without using any voting mana. So now, the idea is that we can use downvotes to add balance to the ecosystem...the only issue is that this ability has given way to rallying purists that have their own idea of what things should look like on Steemit.com.
It is easy to see the idea that they are going for. The idea of correcting the major "misdirection" that Steemit.com was heading. Unfortunately, the ability to downvote was given to humans, and humans always believe they know what is best. Not only for themselves, but for everyone else. So that is when the mass downvoting and even downvoting trails began. This is where the middle finger comes in. It feels like everyone that has a larger stake and an opinion about the direction of the platform are beginning to give everyone the middle finger as they reshape the landscape to their vision.
Other changes that are coming via the hardforks is the coming SMT(smart media tokens). This will allow businesses and communities to build their own front end (web site) on the Steem blockchain and create their own token to go with it. When this happens it will allow something that resembles a reset. The site owner will be able to make the changes that they see fit, and learn from the lessons of what has come before.
As it stands I do not believe that Steemit.com will actually grow on it's own because of the marauders that are effecting others experiences. There will be great posts on Steemit.com, but that will come from the front ends cross posting.
When we talk about all of these "changes", I didn't have a problem with how it was before. I didn't have an issue with whales that were earning tons of steem via owning bidbots, or even the posts that were being inflated because of bidbots.
I did not have an issue with vote buying and vote selling...it has benefited my family greatly. It is only now that there is a problem. When some choose to use their stake however they like (downvoting others and "correcting" the platform) that seems ok, but someone using their stake to mine more steem is not?!
With all of this being said, sure, it could be easy to argue for either direction....I choose to not argue, but to build. I am going to continue developing Inner Blocks. I choose to not focus on the darkness, but the light ahead.
If you love new steem that makes me very happy. If you do not like new steem, I understand. Stacie D and I knew that when we were going to build our own front end that it would be a great place to go..but we didn't know it was going to be necessary because of the Steemit.com refugees.
Be well
