When it comes to chainsaws, we all have a different way of approaching them. I believe in taking good care of my chainsaw, because I know that it will take care of me..and has.
I know that some people will just toss them into the bed of their truck, or leave them sitting out through different types of weather..but that is not what I am about. I feel connected to the saw, and I actually almost refuse to use anyone else's saw.
Today I am talking a bit about why I choose to manually sharpen my chains. There are a couple of things that really stand out about it. One is the science of it, and the other is more personal.
The science part that I talk more about in the video is the temper of the steel. The chain comes already sharpened and fully heat treated. When we use a mechanical device that moves at high RPM, we run the risk of messing with the temper. This can lead to each tooth behaving differently.
If you change how a tooth is tempered, you could effect how quickly it wears compared to the others.Not only does it wear weird, but you could get yourself in the situation of not actually being able to manually sharpen it in the field.
Say you are used to getting it mechanically sharpened, but you are in the field and it dulls out. You need to touch it up, but then you find that the file glides across and you can't actually get it to bite.
The other issue that I have is...I want to feel it. I feel like I connect with my tools and that is what helps me to take better care of them. I like to get a feel for how they handle, and know exactly what is causing issues to happen while running it.
I like to feel the file as it is going across the jacked up tooth. At first it can't go at all, but once it starts to cut it gets really smooth. I think there is some satisfaction from the feeling that comes from sharpening the teeth myself.
