Public road transport system is fraught with low Standards, promotes car use, lack of data, confused regulation, scattered among different agencies
The power of unions
We have a sellers Market controlled by two major unions- GPRTU and PROTOA who Control more than 50% of the road passenger movement; it's an oligopoly; it creates a cartel
Poor infrastructure; no attention to the consumer
The poor public transport system encourages personal ownership of cars
66% of all trips to Accra enter the central business district
The govt working on bringing about a Regulatory Authority to sanitize the chaos on the road
In 15years time Taxis may be going off the roads to be taken over by Uber type
In 50 years time there may not be the need for Drivers as driveless cars are rolled onto the roads
Road transport regulations managed by different agencies- NRSC, MTTD, Local Authorities, etc.
There is the need to establish the Road Traffic Regulatory Authority to coordinate these bodies and especially set Standards and ensure all adhere to them just as we have in Civil Aviation, Maritime and Rail.
DVLA to issue Special licences to trailers separate from Truck Heads
Uber, Taxify, etc will be regulated soon; they will be given Special stickers on the vehicles
