I already talked about the SNES version of Taz-Mania, which is not all bad, I would give it a 6/10, because although it is a game that becomes entertaining, it has a somewhat repetitive mechanics and one of the most negative aspects it has is that its scenarios contain elements that are also repeated throughout the adventure. That is why this version of SEGA is much better even though in terms of mechanics is a fairly conventional platform and action game, but still contains certain elements and mechanics beyond the classic side-scrolling platform game, for that reason this version is more entertaining. So without further ado.
Today's Retro Review is about: Taz-Mania (Megadrive).
Unlike the previous game which did not have a plot itself and directly at the start of the game we enter the career of Taz, this version does have a story, simple, as usual in this kind of video games, but at least it has one. And is that the story of this game begins when Taz's grandfather is telling a very old story about how before there were giant birds which laid eggs just as giant, in this way were used as food that could last a long time. It is said that these birds still live in the "Lost Valley", so Taz upon hearing such a story embarks on an adventure to find these birds and these giant eggs. As you can read a story as simple as many other stories that we can find in games of this genre, just being a simple excuse to get into a story full of platforms and enemies to defeat.
The graphics are still as good as its Nintendo counterpart, although I think at least in the design of Taz, in the SNES version I see it better, at least I perceive it that way, however in everything else, the Megadrive version stands out much more, both in animation, amount of scenarios, details and decor and also in the coloring. This version presents a better and varied amount of elements on screen, there are many scenarios to which we can go, from forests, jungles, mountains, a kind of city, rivers, scenarios full of ice and so on, it was really necessary that a game of this genre had a greater and better amount of scenarios to go to. This is a game that just like the SNES version, manages to excellently capture what was seen in the animated series. The characters, especially Taz, transmit their personality excellently thanks to the use of animations and expressions. The scenarios on the other hand, as I mentioned before, are very varied, with excellent details. The enemies that are in the scenarios will be thematic depending on where we are, for example, if we are in an ice scenario we can find penguins as enemies.
This game unlike the SNES version if based directly on the animated series, therefore in this game we can find some melodies that are also found in the animated series, are very well composed and adapted for the sound chip of the Megadrive, there will also be original melodies made for this game which are also very well. As we can expect the tunes are made to convey "fun, adventure and even madness", as we all know that Taz is one of the craziest characters of the Looney Tunes. Taz-Mania for Megadrive is an entertaining and charismatic platform game where, logically we control Taz, this being a much better version than the SNES and although most of the time we will maintain the classic characteristics of the games of this genre, ie, advance in side scroll is scenarios, with enemies and go jumping between obstacles and platforms to reach an objective.
There will also be scenarios where we must do other different actions, giving this way a little more variety to this game, for example, in a certain level we will move on a wagon, similar to the level of Donkey Kong Country. This is a game with a certain level of speed, it is not a Sonic but it is a little faster than other games of the same genre, also logically Taz can use his classic twist that will make us move faster. It has 19 phases of moderate difficulty, especially in the last levels, so it is a small challenge quite entertaining. Also as is common in this type of games, in the scenarios we can find items that allow us to restore the life bar of our character, even items that allow us to perform fire attacks, all with the great humor that characterizes this character. Taz-Mania for Megadrive is an excellent game which I thought it was the one I had played in my childhood, but it turns out that there is another game of this character for the Megadrive that if it is exactly the one I had played, so soon I will also make their respective review.
