Although perhaps currently in terms of video games, Sonic is not so strongly imposed in the industry, without any doubt in his time he was one of the most important mascots of video games and since the release of his first video game many other companies tried to do the same, design a mascot that was the face of their company or at least try to emulate the success of the blue hedgehog. There were several video games that were very successful, others not so much and in the case of the video game that I will talk about today, I do not know what impact it had, but this is a game that I did not know, although the design of its protagonist pleased me a lot. A game of the platform genre that has enough variety in terms of gameplay to make it a very entertaining game.
Today's Retro Review is about: Rocky Rodent.
In terms of graphics is a game that is pretty good, discards much the design of our protagonist which has a very particular design and not the typical design of very stylized protagonist character and that fits very well with the leading role, but if someone told me that this character is a villain of the story I would believe it easily and is that, let's be honest, Rocky Rodent's design is not at all nice, with this I do not mean that it is a bad design, not at all, but the developers of this game chose to make a sprite of a character that is ugly on purpose and I think this is something that gives quite a lot of personality and charisma to this character. It also presents great expressiveness, a character that changes hairstyle depending on the situation (and this is part of the gameplay mechanics of this title) and it is also a character that does not look like the typical protagonist of a video game whose pet is an animal. It's weird but I think they knew how to do it very well.
It has great mobility and more than decent animations, I feel this is a very important aspect because the gameplay of this game is quite fast, not at the level of Sonic, but it is fast, so having good fluidity of movement and varied animations is essential to look good on screen. There is quite a variety of enemies and these also enjoy solid designs as in the scenarios, although they can become monotonous in several sections of the game, they have good details without being something visually spectacular. Although I think what stands out the most, in some scenarios, is the background of them, as some have very well drawn backgrounds, although it lacked some variety of scenarios, as these only present designs of the city in which the events of this game take place. But at the level of platforming they have a good design, so they are fun to go through. The music is good, although I did not find any melody that makes this game memorable, that is, always some video game, especially the most remembered of the industry, have some melody or several melodies that makes us immediately associate with that game and I feel that Rocky Rodent does not have that.
And while the melodies are fine, as I mentioned before and fulfill their purpose, I think it lacks a much more memorable melody that makes us remember this character that at least in terms of design is quite charismatic. What I do feel that stands out are the sound effects that fit very well with both the personality of the game itself, as well as with the situation and action that we are doing at any given time. In terms of gameplay, it has a lot of the classic Sonic games and several of the most classic elements of platform games. But undoubtedly the gameplay mechanics that makes Rocky Rodent stand out are the hairstyles that the protagonist can acquire, since depending on the hairstyle that our protagonist has equipped he can perform a certain action, which allows him to eliminate enemies using his hairstyle as a throwing blade, while he also has another hairstyle like a braid that serves to hold us and swing us from some places. It also allows you to eliminate all the enemies on screen and many others that we can find in the vast majority of platform games. In short, Rocky Rodent is quite entertaining.
