High Seas Havoc PORTADA.png

Without any doubt Sonic the Hedgehog was a great icon in the video game industry, he was created to be the direct rival to Mario and although today his fame is no longer what it was at the time, during the time of its heyday was also the inspiration for several games, one of them was the game I'll talk about today. A fairly conventional platform game where we can clearly see the inspiration that the developers of this game saw with Sonic the Hedgehog.

That's why today's Retro Review is about: High Seas Havoc.

High Seas Havoc presents us, as in 99% of the games of the platform genre, with an extremely simple plot. The story focuses on Havoc a kind of anthropomorphic seal, which one day when he was with his friend Tide on the shore of the beach they find Bridget, which is quite injured, after saving and healing her, Bridget wakes up and begins to tell him a little about his story and it turns out that she has in her possession a map that shows the place where she is with emerald with great power. An emerald whose villain of this story, Bernardo, wants to have in his possession, therefore he is looking for that map and consequently Bridget, since Bernardo knows that she has it. Because of this, Bridget entrusts the map to Havoc for him to hide it. However, after several days, one of Bernardo's henchmen finds Bridget's location and kidnaps her and Tide. So now Havoc must go in search of his friends in a great adventure.

Graphically it is quite good, in a game with a variety of colors, although they are not very bright, but equally striking. There is a good variety of scenarios, from meadows, forests, cities, ports, boats, ships, in this adventure we will have several scenarios so we can travel freely and also have a good size, as well as decorative elements that makes each place we go is unique. It is not the most spectacular game in terms of scenery, but with what it brings manages to capture very well what represents a game of the platform genre.

At the level of character and sprite design is also very good, highlighting by far both the design of our main character, as well as the designs of the final bosses, which by having larger sprites the developers had the opportunity to make them with better details and although the normal enemies we see in each scenario are not bad at all, there are some that have very simple designs, but in terms of variety they are more than fine. And also in general they have decent animations which always add a lot to any kind of game, no matter what genre it is, although in a platform game it is something of utmost importance.

The music is very appropriate for both the pirate theme of this game as well as for what is a platform game, as we will find music with cheerful and very dynamic tones. The games of the platform genre have certain melodies that when we listen to them we know that we are in front of a platform game, it is like a cliché that games of this style use a lot and in High Seas Havoc we will be able to listen to some of them, but there are also other melodies that are very good.

High Seas Havoc Playlist OST

High Seas Havoc is a fairly conventional platform game, with a mobility on the stage quite similar to Sonic the Hedgehog, being this something for which this game was criticized at the time, however although its inspiration is quite evident, it is a game that maintains its own charisma and personality. Havoc is able to perform actions previously seen in games of this genre, jump, run. As a good platform game, we must advance through the scenarios, collect items that give us points that accumulate at the end of each stage and then be able to fight against the typical final boss of each stage end, which presents with movement pattern and attack different from the others, however it is not a game whose difficulty is high.

Although Havoc can move on the stage with a certain speed and can also increase it by means of some items that we will find in chests along the stages, his speed is not as high as Sonic. Although sometimes the control over our character can be a little frustrating, especially when jumping, since after falling Havoc slips a little, it is not a negative aspect that will ruin the game experience, since you can easily learn to adapt to this peculiarity.

High Seas Havoc is a decent platform game, which at the time and from what I've read was unfairly criticized for its similarity to Sonic, but in the end it's still a more than decent and fun platform game.

High Seas Havoc Playlist OST
