The advertising of any kind of brands outside of video games have always tried to get into the world of video games to try to hook that audience with their product, this is nothing new and brands like Pepsi, McDonald's and even Burger King has done it. This is nothing out of the ordinary and many of these games are really crappy, but others, like the one I will talk about today are really entertaining games. 7-UP is a very popular brand of soda and although the mascot I know of this brand is Fido Dido, it turns out that there was another mascot which stars in two games and although personally I already knew the game I will talk about today, until the day I was playing for the first time I found out that it was also a 7-UP mascot, so without further ado.
Today's Retro Review is about: Cool Spot.
The story of this game could not be more simple and basic, that is, it is a game made by mere advertising a brand of soda, logically and obviously going to have a basic story, simple. The story focuses on Cool Spot, which is, what I think is a kind of red soda cap and wears glasses, or just a spot with glasses, the truth is that's kind of irrelevant, I just have to say that despite its simplicity, it looks pretty cool. The story begins when Cool Spot and his friends are kidnapped by a person in order to use them as advertising, since for some reason they are eye-catching to the public, however, our bold protagonist escapes from the clutches of his kidnapper and now he must go in search of his friends and rescue them. That's how simple the story is, just an excuse to make our protagonist embark on an unparalleled adventure.
This game has different versions, which are adapted both graphically and sonorously according to the platform on which they were developed, I chose the Mega Drive version, as I personally consider that it is the version which graphically looks better. In this version I think the details are better, both in the characters and in the scenarios, because despite being a game made exclusively for advertising, the developers really did a more than decent job in creating this game, even I could see a little as were the other versions of this game and despite the graphical changes, also look pretty good. One of the aspects by which this game stands out with respect to the graphical aspect, are the animations that can make our protagonist, they are quite fluid and quite funny, Cool Spot moves with enough personality.
The scenarios are also very good, they are somewhat varied and have a lot of details on screen. I was really surprised by the graphic care that this game has. It is entirely in 2D, but in certain aspects the developers created a graphical aspect that looks like it is in 3D, in some aspects, but it is not. The music on the other hand is quite varied and really not bad at all, wow, another aspect of this game that surprised me when I played it and not to demerit the games made by mere advertising brands, because maybe Cool Spot is not the only really decent game of this style out there, but I'll have to investigate more about it. Leaving that aspect aside and focusing again on the sound aspect, as I was saying, Cool Spot has good melodies, very catchy music, dynamic and that fits with the whole theme of the game and especially with the personality of our protagonist, rock music is what predominates in this game and sounds pretty good.
Cool Spot is a simple side-scrolling platform game, quite simple and without any innovation with respect to the game mechanics, even so, due to its variety of scenarios and designs of them, in addition to its excellent control, makes this game surprisingly entertaining. As I said at the beginning, Spot's friends have been kidnapped and we must go to save them, therefore, we must move in a series of scenarios to rescue them, which are locked in cages, but to find these cages simply can not reach the end of the stage to find them, but we must collect a certain amount of red chips per scenario, after having collected them we will indicate a message on screen that we must find the cage where Spot's friend is locked up. The actions that Spot can perform range from the simple ones like running, jumping, climbing and moving on ropes or on some balloons that will be in certain scenarios, but Spot can also perform a distance attack by snapping his fingers. There will also be the already classic items of this type of games that will allow us to recover the life bar of our protagonist or items that will give us more time. In short, a surprisingly entertaining and well-made game.
