I was shocked and literally in awe when I heard my name being announced as the best student in the decoration department.

I can understand the shock, being that you weren't even in the class from the beginning, but I think you tutor saw a hunger in you to learn the skill which made you ask questions and also gave your utmost participation in the group work. O would say you deserved the award ttat was presented to you.
