El señor estaba cómo murmurando algo y la gente lo veía extrañado. Me acerqué y le entablé conversación, pero al quedarnos en silencio volvía a su ritual: contaba. Contaba piedras, nubes, personas, números, hojas y cuánta cosa podía. Así que luego de un rato le seguí el ritmo y me dijo: cuente sus cosas y no las mías, porque yo sé por qué lo hago. Ignoré sus observaciones y me puse a contar, pasó un rato y me aburrí, así que busqué otras cosas con qué entretenerme y lo dejé contando.
Todas las tardes pasaba y estaba en el mismo oficio: contando, la verdad es que al principio no entendí su afán, hasta que cayó enfermo y en el hospital oí su historia, logrando entender su obsesión, lo hacía porque él no quería que su vida contara.
The man who counted
The gentleman was mumbling something and people looked at him strangely. I approached him and engaged him in conversation, but when we were silent he went back to his ritual: he counted. He counted stones, clouds, people, numbers, leaves and anything else he could. So after a while I kept up with him and he said: count your things and not mine, because I know why I do it. I ignored his remarks and started counting, a while passed and I got bored, so I looked for other things to entertain me and left him counting.
The truth is that at first I did not understand his eagerness, until he fell ill and in the hospital I heard his story, and I managed to understand his obsession: he did not want his life to count.
