Cuds are formed from dies that have a piece break off on the edge. This leaves an area that contains no design (obviously, haven fallen away), and subsequent planchets (coin blanks) struck by that die exhibit unstruck areas such as this.
Found in a roll of cents on 04/23/2018 by myself.
