"Match"

"Match"

Hello, friends of Holus Lotus. As usual, I’m sharing a reflective piece on the new way we get to know one another – which is now through apps – where many of us use them with the intention of flirting with someone, making friends, or for casual encounters, and whilst these apps can certainly be a place to connect, they can also be a self-esteem-crushing machine where we unconsciously put ourselves at the mercy of the tastes and judgements of people who only see us through a couple of photos.
And it’s not my intention to judge them, but the reality is that on these dating apps there’s something for everyone, which is why we must first take a good look at ourselves and be very clear about what we’re looking for there and what our expectations are, because it’s very important to realise that on a screen where nobody knows us, people either choose you, want you or reject you.
If our self-esteem is very fragile, these apps can cause us a great deal of psychological harm – and I’m not exaggerating – because we associate every ‘match’ or rejection with our own worth, leading us to develop negative beliefs about ourselves.
That’s why it’s important to take a step back and realise that on these platforms we aren’t being judged for who we are, but rather for a tiny snapshot of ourselves – a couple of photos, a few phrases and some filters – presented against a backdrop of endless preferences and biases that, ultimately, are nothing personal.
But the problem with all this isn’t the dating apps themselves, but our expectations and why we think we need them to meet people.
Because we must also bear in mind that in these places, many of the things we are looking for – such as connection and emotional commitment – are simply non-existent.
Loneliness and our emotional needs often lead us to fill these voids with these apps, where we get our hopes up at the idea that we’ll find connection there and a real chance of finding love – and whilst that might be the case, it’s not usually how it turns out.
That’s why, before using these apps, we need to realise that they aren’t the only way to meet people, but simply another option available to us these days.
That is why we must learn not to rely so much on our mobile phone screens and show ourselves more as we really are, drawing on our authenticity and true nature.
I once heard someone say, ‘May love find you doing what you love most’
And yes, you might find me in a park reading, exercising or spending time with my friends.
Ultimately, it’s far more important to get to know ourselves, cultivate self-love and always choose ourselves; because it’s not about demonising these apps, but about being able to use them – not out of necessity, but with awareness.
Recognising that they are a means to an end, not an end in themselves, as we so often believe.
Thank you very much for reading; I hope you’ve enjoyed it
