Turning forty

Photo of My propiety

Hello, friends of Holus Lotus. As usual, I’m sharing a reflective piece, and this time it’s a personal account.

This year I turned 40, and at the time I didn’t give it much thought, but as the weeks and months went by, questions and thoughts began to surface in my mind about getting older, my future and how I was going to manage to become more financially independent, as this age brings many things into sharp focus.

Psychologically speaking, being told you’re 40 but not looking it is a compliment, but reaching this age without having achieved much on a personal level is a real blow, because the opportunities you had when you were younger are no longer there – and that’s precisely when I remember the value of time and how to make the most of it.

Emotionally, too, I’ve realised that I’ve matured a great deal; that I enjoy my single life more; that solitude is no longer a problem for me (although I would like to have someone by my side); and that happiness for me means being at peace and knowing that not everyone is there for me, nor am I there for them; that my fears are no longer my enemies but an opportunity to grow and become stronger through them.

But it is on a social level that I am beginning to see the cruelty associated with this age and the subtle discrimination we face

Because in the workplace we’re already considered old and no longer have the same opportunities as before, and when swiping on dating apps or trying to form romantic connections, saying you’re 40 is a thinly veiled message: ‘we’ll talk later’ – or they simply block you

and that’s when we unconsciously start to reject ourselves because we’re no longer seen in the same light.

Of course, I’m only mentioning a few things here, as there are more

But my focus here isn’t just on the negative aspects, but on how we’re taught to categorise and label people based on their status, profession and age

And this is discrimination, because when I personally went to apply for a job, I was told that: “I met the job profile but the age limit was 35” and that made me feel bad at the time because I needed the job and it was frustrating; however, it made me reflect a great deal, particularly on those people who still feel capable and useful, but whom society denies an opportunity simply because they’ve reached a certain age.

Perhaps that’s how it is in my country; I don’t know about other countries, but I’m not ashamed of being 40 – in fact, I’ve been very lucky to have got this far, because only I know what I’ve had to overcome to better myself

Perhaps from now on, life will teach me to view it with more compassion and to realise that rules are also made to be broken – not in the sense of breaking the law, but to show that our future lies in our own hands and not in the hands of big companies.

That’s why I’ve learnt to look after my mental health and go to therapy from time to time, so as not to lose heart, and to realise that life is often absurd, as Albert Camus said, and yet we can still learn to ride the waves of life so as not to drown in them.

Well, with nothing more to add, I hope you’ve enjoyed it as much as I have

Until next time
