Making a film adaptation is not easy, there are many standards to meet and expectations to cover. When it is a book it is easy to adapt the characters and their scenarios to how the director imagines them, that can go very wrong if the scenarios are well described, the thing changes when it is a play that you want to take to the big screen because of the limited that format is in terms of scenarios.
The truth is that in 1968 a play marked the lives of many homosexuals, a year before the Stonewall riots and all the revolution that followed. That year saw the light the play "The Boys in the Band" written by the immortal Mart Crowley, a play that broke a milestone as the first homosexual play entirely starring a gay couple and the first not to have the classic tragic ending that art has accustomed us to suffer.
The play was a success and helped trigger a true revolution that continues to this day. However, in 1970 William Friedkin took it to the big screen using the original cast of the play, the poster of this film was widely censored by the press at that time who argued religious reasons.
Some time later the play also saw the light of day in Mexico, being the first of its kind to be released in that country, and then it would be Spain's turn. It would take 50 years for Broadway to rescue again the script of this play to celebrate it in style. Joe Mantello would be in charge of taking the reins of this new staging with a cast of luminaries completely integrated by openly gay personalities. That revival won the Tony Award in 2019, which perhaps motivated the gay showrunner par excellence of our times to make a new version for Netflix, repeating the same formula of repeating the same original cast of the play to bring it to life on the big screen.
Of course I'm talking about Ryan Murphy, who in a string of premieres of major productions, had great successes and failures in 2020. Productions like Hollywood, The Politician and the sequel to Pose left a good taste in my mouth in a gray time like last year.
But I'm not going to tell you more about this production so you can join me to enjoy a tour of the technical specifications, synopsis and most importantly my opinion about this film that I bring to you today with much affection.
Hacer una adaptaci贸n cinematogr谩fica no es que sea f谩cil, hay muchos est谩ndares que cumplir y expectativas por cubrir. Cuando es un libro es f谩cil adaptar los personajes y sus escenarios a como el director los imagina, eso puede salir muy mal si los escenarios est谩n bien descritos, la cosa cambia cuando es una obra de teatro la que se quiere llevar a la gran pantalla por lo limitado que es ese formato en cuanto a escenarios.
Lo cierto es que en 1968 una obra de teatro marc贸 la vida de muchos homosexuales, un a帽o antes de los disturbios de Stonewall y toda la revoluci贸n que vino despu茅s. Ese a帽o vio la luz la obra "Los Chicos de la Banda" escrita por el inmortal Mart Crowley una obra que rompi贸 un hito al ser la primera obra homosexual enteramente protagonizada por una pareja gay y la primera en no tener el cl谩sico final tr谩gico que el arte nos ha acostumbrado a padecer.
La obra fue un 茅xito y ayudo a desencadenar una verdadera revoluci贸n que contin煤a hasta nuestros d铆as. Sin embargo en 1970 William Friedkin la llev贸 a la gran pantalla utilizando al elenco original de la obra de teatro, el p贸ster de esta pel铆cula fue ampliamente censurado por la prensa de aquel entonces quienes argumentaban razones religiosas.
Tiempo despu茅s la obra tambi茅n vio la luz en M茅xico siendo la primera en su estilo en estrenarse en dicho pa铆s y luego le tocar铆a el turno a Espa帽a. Tendr铆an que pasar 50 a帽os para que Broadway rescatara de nuevo el guion de esta obra para celebrarla por todo lo alto. Ser铆a Joe Mantello el encargado de llevar las riendas de esta nueva puesta en escena con un elenco de luminarias completamente integrado por personalidades abiertamente homosexuales. Dicho reestreno gan贸 el premio Tony en 2019, lo que quiz谩s motiv贸 al showrunner gay por excelencia de nuestros tiempos a realizar una nueva versi贸n para Netflix, repitiendo la misma f贸rmula de repetir al mismo elenco original de la obra para darle vida en la gran pantalla.
Por supuesto les hablo de Ryan Murphy qui茅n en un seguidilla de estrenos de grandes producciones, tuvo grandes aciertos y desaciertos en 2020. Producciones como Hollywood, The Politician y la continuaci贸n de Pose me dejaron un buen sabor de boca en una 茅poca gris como lo fue el a帽o pasado.
Pero no les voy a adelantar m谩s acerca de esta producci贸n para que me acompa帽en a disfrutar de un recorrido por la ficha t茅cnica, Sinopsis y lo m谩s importante mi opini贸n acerca de esta pel铆cula que con mucho cari帽o traigo para ustedes hoy.

It's 1968 the year before Stonewall and six great friends organize a party for another cynical and ironic member of the "gang" Harold ( Zachary Quinto) the party is held at the house of the particularly master of ceremonies Michael (Jim Parsons), who has decided to stop drinking alcohol, the first to realize that is our first handsome guest of the party Donald (Matt Bomer). However, Michael will get carried away by the adrenaline and forget that he has promised not to drink anymore, provoking a number of situations that will put his friends to fight against their own demons.
Michael is afraid of growing old even though his hair is falling out, so at first we realize the complications this character brings with him. The beautiful Donald, using his common sense, plays along with his former lover. While they talk and tell each other their intimacies, Michael prepares the food for the party with much love but forgets to buy the birthday cake that ends up undone later by the rain. But the food Michael prepares is crab, which is somewhat unsuitable for this type of gathering because of the aphrodisiac effects it usually has...
As the night progresses other members of the band join the celebration, all the guests arrive on time except the birthday boy Harold, whose tardiness is normal and tolerated. But while waiting for the birthday boy we get to know the personality of other characters including Emory (Robin de Jesus, nominated for a Tony Award), the most charismatic member of the band who with his jokes and irony end up making us have a great time, there is also Larry (Andrew Rannells) and her boyfriend who will probably get divorced Hank (Tuc Watkins) a couple with many conflicts and jealousy in between. Meanwhile, Bernard (Michael Benjamin Washington) is the only black-skinned member of the gang whose past still haunts him.
But the real surprise comes with the two unexpected guests who arrive at the party one after the other. The first is Emory's birthday present, a sexy cowboy prostitute (Charlie Carver) to whom the word dumb is an understatement and a second guest more unexpected and unwelcome than the first: Alan (Brian Hutchison) Michael's former "straight" college roommate who calls him desperately in a fit of anxiety and can't understand that maybe his friend can't take care of him at that moment, but that doesn't stop him and risks showing up at a party he hasn't been invited to. Alan arrives at the party and everyone must pretend to be straight in the face of Alan's impending homophobia. When Alan realizes that not only is he surrounded by a bunch of gay men, but that his former best friend from college, who seemed girl-crazy at the time, is actually gay it sets off a whirlwind of accusations that would make even the hardest of hearts cringe.
Es 1968 el a帽o anterior a Stonewall y seis grandes amigos organizan una fiesta para otro c铆nico e ir贸nico integrante de la "banda" Harold ( Zachary Quinto) la fiesta es celebrada en la casa del particularmente maestro de ceremonias Michael (Jim Parsons), qui茅n ha decidido dejar de beber alcohol, el primero en darse cuenta de eso es nuestro primer guapo invitado de la fiesta Donald (Matt Bomer). Sin embargo Michael se dejar谩 llevar por la adrenalina y olvidar谩 que ha prometido no beber m谩s, provocando un sin n煤mero de situaciones que pondr谩n a sus amigos a luchar contra sus propios demonios.
Michael teme envejecer a pesar de que su cabello se est谩 cayendo, por lo que en un primer instante nos damos cuenta de las complicaciones que trae consigo este personaje. El hermoso Donald, haciendo uso de su sentido com煤n le sigue la corriente a su antiguo amante. Mientras hablan y se cuentan sus intimidades, Michael prepara la comida para la fiesta con mucho amor pero se olvida de comprar la torta de cumplea帽os que termina deshecha despu茅s por la lluvia. Pero la comida que prepara Michael son cangrejos algo inadecuados para este tipo de reuniones por los efectos afrodis铆acos que suele tener...
A medida que la noche va avanzando otros integrantes de la banda se unen a la celebraci贸n, todos los invitados llegan a tiempo menos el cumplea帽ero Harold, cuyas tardanzas son normales y toleradas. Pero mientras esperamos al festejado vamos conociendo la personalidad de otros personajes entre ellos Emory (Robin de Jes煤s, nominado a un premio Tony), el miembro m谩s carism谩tico de la banda qui茅n con sus chistes y su iron铆a terminan por hacernos pasar un gran rato, tambi茅n est谩n Larry (Andrew Rannells) y su novio que probablemente se divorciar谩 Hank (Tuc Watkins) una pareja con muchos conflictos y celos de por medio. Por su parte Bernard (Michael Benjamin Washington) el 煤nico integrante de piel negra de la banda a qui茅n su pasado todav铆a sigue persiguiendo.
Pero la verdadera sorpresa viene con los dos invitados inesperados que llegan a la fiesta uno detr谩s del otro. El primero es el regalo de cumplea帽os de Emory, un sexi vaquero que se prostituye (Charlie Carver) al cual la palabra tonto le queda corto y un segundo invitado m谩s inesperado e inoportuno que el primero: Alan (Brian Hutchison) el antiguo compa帽ero de habitaci贸n "heterosexual" de Michael en la universidad quien lo llama desesperado en un ataque de ansiedad y no logra entender que quiz谩s su amigo no lo puede atender en aquel momento, pero eso no lo detiene y se arriesga a presentarse en una fiesta en la cual no ha sido invitado. Alan llega a la fiesta y todos deben fingir ser heterosexuales ante la inminente homofobia que se respira por parte de Alan. Cuando Alan se da cuenta de que no s贸lo est谩 rodeado de un mont贸n de hombres homosexuales, sino que su mejor antiguo amigo de la universidad, que parec铆a estar loco por las chicas en aquel entonces, en verdad es gay se desata un torbellino de acusaciones que har铆an reflexionar hasta el m谩s duro coraz贸n.
I was quite reluctant to see this movie, because it didn't catch my attention even though I thought it had something to do with music. But Jim Parsons has become a great reference for acting nowadays, he is such a great actor that I wouldn't want him to be pigeonholed to only do gay characters. His dialogues are awesome, he is always flawless how much I enjoyed his character in Hollywood he seemed to be so deep, every emotion, every word, every second of his character is great.
But all the actors were perfect, so much so that I think the best thing about this movie is its cast. Zachary Quinto is a great actor in every expression of the word, but it's hard to choose a favorite because Brian Hutchison was also amazing, along with the rest of the cast.
No doubt, being an adaptation of a play, it was to be expected that almost the entire film would take place on one set. But the director took advantage of every space in that apartment to create a genius, it is wonderful how every light, every part of that place, every corner was used to make magic. When you have creativity, the budget doesn't matter, although with so many productions that Ryan Murphy makes per year, sometimes you lose sight of some like "Ratched", I still believe that he is the director par excellence of queer content at this time.
Me resist铆 bastante a ver esta pel铆cula, porque no me llamaba la atenci贸n aunque cre铆 que ten铆a algo que ver con la m煤sica. Pero Jim Parsons se ha convertido en una gran referencia para la actuaci贸n actualmente, es un gran actor tanto que no me gustar铆a que fuera encasillado a solo hacer personajes homosexuales. Sus di谩logos son impresionantes, siempre est谩 impecable cuanto disfrut茅 de su personaje en Hollywood que parec铆a ser tan profundo, cada emoci贸n, cada palabra, cada segundo de su personaje es genial.
Pero todos los actores estuvieron perfectos, tanto que creo que lo mejor de esta pel铆cula es su elenco. Zachary Quinto es un gran actor en toda la expresi贸n de la palabra, pero es dif铆cil elegir a un favorito porque Brian Hutchison tambi茅n estuvo incre铆ble, junto a todo el resto del cast.
Sin duda al ser una adaptaci贸n de una obra de teatro era de esperarse que casi toda la pel铆cula se desarrollara en un solo set. Pero el director aprovecho cada espacio de ese apartamento para crear una genialidad, es maravilloso como cada luz, cada parte de ese lugar, cada rinc贸n fue utilizado para hacer magia. Cuando se tiene creatividad poco importa el presupuesto aunque con tantas producciones que Ryan Murphy hace al a帽o, a veces se pierdan de vistas algunas como "Ratched", sigo creyendo que es el realizador por excelencia de contenido queer en este momento.
So much so that the expression "he's so gay he appeared in a Ryan Mur5 movie" seems to be a running joke in the community. What was most celebrated despite the possible shortcomings this film may have is undoubtedly that it continues to celebrate, love beyond homophobia.
And above all celebrate productions like this, which marked a before and after, also that promoted tolerance and started a real revolution that does not end. We certainly have to immerse ourselves in the life of each character to discover how they fight against their own stigmas, that's why I find the script very current and timeless.
Because we are constantly fighting our own demons and those of others, but there is magic in human relationships. There is magic in a script as human as its creator who unfortunately could not live the premiere of this film in September 2020, because a heart attack would take him to immortality where the stars rest. I definitely recommend this film, whose ending left me wanting more despite the 2 hours of duration.
Tanto que la expresi贸n "es tan gay que apareci贸 en una pel铆cula de Ryan Mur5" parece ser un chiste com煤n en la comunidad. Lo que m谩s celebr贸 a pesar de las posibles deficiencias que pueda tener esta pel铆cula es sin duda que se siga celebrando, el amor m谩s all谩 de la homofobia.
Y sobre todo celebrar producciones como est谩, que marcaron un antes y un despu茅s, tambi茅n que promovieron la tolerancia y comenzaron una verdadera revoluci贸n que no se acaba. Sin duda tenemos que sumergirnos en la vida de cada personaje para descubrir c贸mo luchan contra sus propios estigmas, por eso me parece muy actual y atemporal el guion.
Porque constantemente estamos luchando contra nuestros propios demonios y con los de los dem谩s, pero hay magia en las relaciones humanas. Hay magia en un guion tan humano como su creador que lamentablemente no pudo vivir el estreno de esta pel铆cula en Septiembre de 2020, porque un ataque al coraz贸n se lo llevar铆a a la inmortalidad donde descansan las estrellas. Sin duda recomiendo esta pel铆cula, cuyo final me dej贸 con ganas de m谩s a pesar de las 2 horas de duraci贸n.
