Hello my Hive people! Today I hope you have a wonderful and successful day, I'm still betting on the platform doing what I love, dedicating time to my personal growth. Today I wanted to bring you a review of a production that has taken me almost a month to watch because of how complicated my routine is lately. When I started watching the series that brings me before you today, I didn't know where exactly it was directed or what it was about but after watching Halston and a number of other series like The Politician or Pose I knew that Ryan Murphy would hook me again with another of his moving and well told productions.
Set in the golden age of Hollywood, it's only natural that it's based on the lives of hundreds of famous people from the 40's in the last century, just after the success of Gone with the Wind, the best example of the movies being made at that time. Thus, with a bunch of familiar faces, Ryan Murhy and Ian Brennan, his eternal collaborator, manage to give a different color to the golden years of cinema, in their own mecca.
With several references to scandals of the time, they manage to convey the essence of the magic of those years and the rawness of xenophobia, racism and homophobia prevailing in those days. However, the series does not deal with these issues, rather it is an almost fantasy portrait of a longed-for era and what could have happened if the story were written by an ambitious showrunner from any major film studio.
I doubt very much that this series will have a second season but I liked the first one a lot, I like the way it was told but at this point I think I'm stretching too much, so you better read this review that I have prepared for you today.
隆Hola m铆 gente de Hive!

Handsome young aspiring actor Jack Castello (David Corenswet), is ready to fulfill his dreams after fighting in World War II. He and his wife Henrietta (Maude Apatow) have moved to Los Angeles so Jack can make his dream come true: that of being a movie star. While she works at Schwab Pharmaceuticals, he goes to Ace Studios every morning to see if he can get work as an extra or hopefully be discovered by one of those famous agents.
Seeing the difficulty of achieving stardom, Jack suddenly finds himself working in a male prostitution ring disguised as a gas station alongside him another young dreamer and screenwriter Archie Coleman (Jeremy Pope). Their pimp Ernie (Dylan McDermott) instructs them to cater to all kinds of customers who say the keyword "Dreamland" in one of these appointments Jack meets Avis Amberg (Patti LuPone), the wife of the owner of Ace Pictures. Archie meets the love of his life Rock Hudson (Jake Picking).
Soon, life smiles on Jack and Archie and when they least expect it, they are working in a studio. Jack joins Camille (Laura Harrier) and Amberg's whimsical daughter Claire (Samara Weaving) on the Ace crew, which is directed by Ellen Kincaid (Holland Taylor); while the script Archie has written based on the tragic story of a white girl is assigned to young director Raymond Ainsley (Darren Criss), who gives the lead roles to Jack, Claire and his girlfriend Camille. This is how they manage to get the green light for a controversial film written by a black man, homosexual and starring a black woman involved in an interracial relationship, all of which would have been impossible in the era in which it was set, but Hollywood pulls it off. Will they manage to pull off such a difficult film amidst the pressure? There is still much to be discovered in Hollywood.
The most remarkable thing about this Murphy and Brennan production is that their version of Hollywood's golden age is more inclusive than it really was and this fantasy was trashed by critics, to my mind it is a tribute to how things would have been different if perhaps they had been different. Artistic license is the order of the day but what did they expect? Not even The Crown has escaped from drawing reality to make it more digestible, although there is always the risk that the new generations believe that it is a reality presented by these productions.
Murphy was clearly inspired by the classic Hollywood of that era, having the big budget allocated by Netflix to evoke the era of cinema he loves. So he tries to have the face of countless real stars by rewriting the past at will until he gets it to adhere to modern standards of diversity and representation. This is how instead of confronting the true reality that prevailed at the time Murphy simply replaces it with something more acceptable and dreamed up that simply didn't exist.
So in this alternate reality Archie a black and gay screenwriter will succeed with his movie, we will also see his boyfriend a fictionalized version of actor and heartthrob Rock Hudson played by Jake Picking who chooses not to hide his sexuality as he did in real life. Darren Criss' character on the other hand is married to a black woman named Camille (Laura Harrier), and it seems that their marriage does not cause the slightest stupor in the Hollywood of the series.
But despite all this, the fantasy is also brilliant and I have been caught up in learning more about Hollywood from an ardent fan of its history, for example the story on which the movie Meg is based in the series is real and it was about the British actress Peg Entwistle who committed suicide by throwing herself from the famous Hollywood sign.
But Entwistle is only the first of many real-life figures who cross paths with the fictional characters in the series, others such as Vivien Leigh, George Cukor, Tallulah Bankhead and Ernest Borgnine also have brief appearances, in addition to Eleanor Roosevelt who also appears in one of the episodes. These characters, although inspired by real people, are fictitious characterizations of reality.
Queen Latifah plays the first black actress to win an Oscar Hattie McDaniel, who in the series becomes Camille's mentor, Anna May Wong played brilliantly by Michelle Krusiec is chosen to play a vindictive role in Meg. Jim Parsons is also flawless as Henry Wilson and pulls off a masterful performance as always, he is also inspired by a real life character.
But if anyone stole my heart it was Rock Hudson played by Jake Picking I thought it was a great tribute that Hollywood wanted to give to the actor, who died of complications from AIDS in 1985 after spending his life hiding his sexuality and that in the series does not hesitate to shout to the world that he is gay and in love something that in real life he never could.
Anyway, Hollywood was good, it is entertaining despite its fantasy managed to convince me for its great cast and its impeccable setting, if you are a fan of film history and a true cinephile you will enjoy it as much as I did with the best company and enjoying another great production of Ryan. For me it's a 7/10.
