A new meeting with friends from the Virtual World and Hive Pizza communities, around from La Fogata, where we share wonderful stories full of creativity. In this new edition, I share my story below and I hope everyone likes it.
☀️ The Silent Witness of Horror
Slowly, the man approaches the window and uncontrollably, tears flood his face. Looking through the empty spaces where, once upon a time, an elegant curtain adorned what was once the sumptuous room at the top of one of the most spectacular mansions on the outskirts of Warsaw, memories come back to stab him in the flesh.
The red shawl is no longer on the lawn, which, wild, shows the inclemency of the passing of time and nature. But in his mind, he sees it, clearly, posed as an inert being, to whom cowardice and horror, did not allow him to reach where the love of the woman who wore it wanted to reach.
Those were strange times, to say the least. With invading forces occupying every inch of what was once a beautiful European city, the lives of its citizens had changed drastically. For some, the changes were limited to following orders and being subservient to those who, with an iron fist, now ruled their country.
For others, the occupation meant losing everything, even their own perception of humanity. This large group of human beings was relegated, pushed aside, and banned from any place or any activity. The barbarism reached such an extent that even love was forbidden between the citizens most favored by the occupation and those who had been outlawed.
The man remembers her with love because that was what he felt for that woman marked with the sign of ignominy, a star that pointed to heaven, but which, in those times, meant for millions, the entrance to hell itself. And it was precisely that love that gave her to her executioners.
Hidden among the slums that the city had become, the woman and her family did everything possible to survive a fate from which there was no escape. Moved by the strength of love, she dared to meet the man whom she believed she would find the security and peace they longed for. It was a risky gamble and the man knew it. Even so, they decided that they would meet in that elegant mansion on the outskirts of the city, which had belonged to precisely one of those families marked and subjected to an apocalyptic horror.
Memories become vivid, looking out the window and choked with tears. He can see her walking, sublime and graceful towards the house, covered with the beautiful red shawl. He can feel the thrill of seeing her approaching, beautiful and elegant. Again, he feels those nerves on the verge of bursting, when at last, they will be able to give free rein to the passion that consumes them, in the midst of so much chaos and misfortune.
Looking out the window, his heart stops, just as it did when he watched the patrol of soldiers stop just outside the entrance to the property. In his mind's eye, he sees the woman running in desperation, and the soldiers shouting at him in their foreign dialect. Again, he hears the rifle shots and shudders as he sees the woman fall, still covered by the red attire. Frightened, he watches as the soldiers approach and, with a jerk, lift her off the ground. The woman screams. The soldiers beat her. Almost inert, they drag her to the patrol car.
The terror of being discovered gripped her spirit and paralyzed, she just looked out the window. He can still feel the woman's fleeting glance as she was lifted from the ground. A brief instant that stayed with him, forever tormenting him. He should have run after her, to her aid, and perhaps his nightmare would have ended in that instant, riddled by the soldiers' bullets. Or, he should have remained motionless and silent, ensuring his permanence and his life in this world submerged in barbarism. The uncertainty of what that fleeting glance meant does not allow him to live in peace.
The red shawl remained on the lawn and still at the window, the man watches as the invading soldier lifts it up. Motionless, he watches as the soldier takes it up to his nose and as if he were a wild beast in search of its prey, he raises his gaze in the direction of the window. Their eyes meet, of that he has no doubt. Paralyzed by terror, the macabre smile on the soldier's face makes him tremble. A couple of seconds that seemed like an eternity, make him live an encounter with the closest thing to a demon. Then, the soldier throws the shawl to the ground and, still smiling, walks away. The man can't take his eyes off the soldier who advances to the patrol car, where the road to the doom of the woman he loves continues. Just before getting into the car, he looks out the window again and smiles.
The man cries inconsolably, leaning against the wall of the room. The suffering is the same as that day when the future he dreamed of with that woman was taken away from him. The beautiful red shawl is no longer on the lawn and now, without the brightness with which it adorned the woman's figure, it rests in the man's hands, holding all his tears and all his pain. Sometime later, her lifeless body was found in that same room, clinging to a tarnished and tattered red shawl, which was a mute witness of life, love, horror, and the cruelest suffering.
