As an avid hiker and traveler, I've always been drawn to the less-traveled paths and hidden gems of the world. While popular tourist destinations are certainly worth seeing, there's something special about discovering a place that's off the beaten path.
Over the years, I've had the opportunity to explore some truly incredible hidden gems around the world. Here are just a few of my favorite off-the-beaten-path travel experiences:
The Lost City, or Ciudad Perdida, is an ancient city in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains of Colombia. It's believed to have been built by the Tayrona people around 800 AD, and was abandoned during the Spanish conquest.
To reach the Lost City, you have to hike through the jungle for four days. The trail is challenging, but the scenery is breathtaking. Along the way, you'll cross rivers, climb mountains, and pass through small villages. When you finally reach the Lost City, you'll feel like you've discovered a hidden treasure.
The Gunung Mulu National Park in Malaysia is home to some of the most spectacular caves in the world. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is known for its incredible karst formations and biodiversity.
To explore the caves of Mulu, you have to take a guided tour. The tours range from easy walks to challenging hikes, and take you through a variety of different caves. Some of the highlights include the Deer Cave, which is one of the largest cave passages in the world, and the Clearwater Cave, which has an underground river and waterfall.
Bagan is an ancient city in Myanmar that's home to over 2,000 Buddhist temples and pagodas. The temples were built between the 11th and 13th centuries, and are spread out across a vast plain.
To explore the temples of Bagan, you can rent a bicycle or an e-bike and spend a few days wandering around. Some of the temples are well-known tourist spots, but there are plenty of hidden gems to discover as well. Watching the sunrise or sunset over the temples is an unforgettable experience.
These are just a few of the off-the-beaten-path travel experiences that I've had over the years. While they may not be as well-known as some of the more popular tourist destinations, they're certainly worth the effort to get there. Exploring hidden gems like these is what makes travel so rewarding and exciting.
