Going for a photo walk with a fixed lens is a decision that you may regret and if that lens is an 100mm macro, the decision becomes even more controversial! Nevertheless I chose to do so and I can't say that I regret it, not at all!
Of course I wasn't in an unfamiliar place, actually I knew what to expect at every turn of the dirty road that I had taken, which makes it easier and less risky. But no matter how many times you have been to a place, there are always pictures to be taken that you haven't imagine in advance. And limiting yourself in a specific focal length may become the reason to loose them for ever!
A few macro shots of the blooming spring flora was a must and I knew that my lens will serve me well in this field. But what about landscapes?
How would a lens, that I bought mainly for macro shots and occasionally a few portraits, perform on a wide scenery, focusing on infinity?
I'll say excellent, as I look the shots that I took. And I just love the slightly compressed perspective. I used to look at that view every day but looking it through that lens was a revelation!
I kept wandering around, playing the game that I had just invented. Reversing the rules that dictate that a proper landscape should be captured with a closed aperture and using a wide open instead.
And stopping every now and then, to smell a flower and capture it too!
I realise that my little game sounds a bit nerdy but it was fun so I don't really care :)
Anyway photography is, by default, a very subjective way to illustrate reality and usually the more subjective it is, the more interesting it gets! I knew that even from my school days. Any two-dimensional representation of a three-dimensional reality can't be truly accurate. It can be realistic or not, it may remind us the reality or not but it is always something totally different.
Some people tend to forget that simple truth. I prefer to embrace it and play with it :)
I took those pictures on March 9th 2022, in Crete, during one of my daily walks around the village I was living in. I have shared more pictures from that day in this post.
The camera that I used is a Canon EOS 6D mark II with an EF 100mm f2.8/L macro lens attached. I edited the photographs in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic
