Happy new month guys! Let's hope that May will be more gentle with humanity and things will gradually return to a more normal pace!
The first day of May has been a day of celebration for many centuries in Greece and the broader area around it. Even from the ancient times it was the day to honor Spring and the God of fertility and agriculture. It is associated with old beliefs about life and death, it has been integrated by Christianity and survived till nowadays as a mixture of pagan practices and folklore tradition!
May's wreath is just a circle made of a flexible branch and decorated with field flowers. But it is supposed to bring happiness, health and protection to the houses that hang it on their doors! And it gets even better!
The wreath should stay on the door until June 24 when there is another big celebration where they are thrown in a big fire and people are jumping over the flames. During that "ceremony" the unmarried girls can find out the name of their future husband! Magic :)
Of course, like most of the old traditions, it is now just an excuse for one more feast with an abundance of food and alcohol at the blooming countryside! Usually it is a day of the year that even the most underpopulated villages has plenty of visitors but today with the lock-down still in effect most of the people stayed confined in the cities. I hope that they won't be mad of us (the very few villagers) for celebrating without their company!
This is part of my #happynewmonth series, a promise that I made to myself more than 3 years ago, to take (at least) one new photograph and share it with my friends, on the very first day of each and every month. If you like the idea you can join the fun too and please let me know!
It is also my contribution to the 18th week of the Photo 52, 2020 Challenge a year-long contest by @wwwiebe. The theme this week is "Cinco de Mayo" but since I am in Greece and not at the States and I couldn't possible find any celebrating Mexicans, I figured that the first of May is as close as I can get :)
I would love to hear how you spend the 1st of May in your country in the comments below and who knows you may even get a juicy upvote due to the Be POSH, Engage and help Hive Thrive initiative by @blocktrades,

All the pictures and the words are mine.
