The past few days I am building a hugelkultur bed which basically is wood buried with soil. It sounds simple but it involves a lot of work especially when you don't have any machinery to help you out! Anyway I am going to write a post about it when I am done. But today I can show you a small version of it!
Fotini (my partner) usually works with me at the farm and as the hugelkultur bed was taking shape she had the idea to make a second, tiny one, just enough to put a tree in it! I haven't heard of anyone doing something like that before, but then again I don't see any reason for it not to work, so she started digging!
Actually it is just a tree hole with the only difference that you fill it up with layers of wood and soil. You begin with large logs, then branches and last even thinner branches. And in between soil. As simple as that!
On top of all that she planted a small fig tree that we had in a pot. It is a variety that we are missing and a couple of years ago I cut two branches from a friend's tree and stuck them in two pots. Both of the became little trees and hopefully soon enough, big ones :)
I helped a bit to bring a few rocks so that a raised bed can be formed and the final touch was compost and wood-chips!
That was it, the tree is now to it's new place! If you want to know more about hugelkultur beds stay tuned and I'll have a post dedicated to them very soon!
