This is just a peak about what I have been doing lately with my NAS...

My own cooling modifications!

alt

This aluminium heatsink on the ASPEED chip was a simple mod/cooling upgrade. And to make my point, it lowered the board temperature from 37ºC to 33ºC! And the sensor is quite distant away from the aluminium cooler I have added (this is a picture provided by ASRock for the thermistor location of the C2750/2550 boards):

Lot's of testing to make sure I will have the service I wish for. Therefore I need to be sure about tests like:

  • Failing a disk does not crash controllers
  • RAIDs using multiple controllers do not crash the RAID if one disk crash
  • Moving disks between controllers (different ones) does not cause corruption
  • Heated room (> 25C) can sustain heavy IO

So, for the last 2 days, I have played with my new 2x SAMSUNG 850 EVO and so far, I am pretty happy. I know they are overkill for XPEnology (because I am running IDE), but the final destination will not be the NAS anyway... so my thoughts about ordering them sooner, were to actually conduct some tests.

I have been doing all sort of tests in order to meet the objectives I have mentioned above. And so far, all perfect!

Caching... IOs is all I care!

Caching also makes a huge difference. Especially when running an Ethereum full node, some other wallets, and two 4GB VMs! All within 16GB of RAM. Look at these beauties...

I have too much work to do... it's impossible for me to have enough time to do this LIFE... but it's still something from which I learn a lot. So beware the next developments...

EDIT: 2017-09-21

After a couple of days working. Almost 79% hit rate... and today 94%! That's absolutely amazing. I have disabled "skip sequencial IO" option. So that might explain the increase on caching... I have now re-enabled to check if there is a big difference.

The next hardware upgrade (teasing)...

I am going to do some tests with M.2 devices. Two and four! This one is arriving soon and has a controller to support up to 4x M.2 B+M devices, two on each side of the card. With 4x PCIe lanes, that's 5Gbit per lane on PCIe 2.0, therefore, enough for each M.2 SSD.
