The Mariana Trench is the deepest oceanic trench on planet Earth.Trenches are basically giant rifts commonly found at the bottom of ocean floors or on land like the great canyon. The Mariana Trench is located at the Pacific Ocean around 200km from the Mariana Islands. It is cresent shaped and is around 2550km long. Thats around 2.5 times longer than BrItain which is around 1000km. Its maximum known depth is around a mind boggling 10000km+ which puts it at a height deeper than mount Everest. At the bottom of the trench the water pressure is over 15000 psi which can crush a large cargo ship several times over. That's over a 1000 times more than the standard atmospheric presssure. temperatures are generally around 1C to 4C. In 2009 it was established as a US monument and it was named after the Mariana Islands located nearby. it contains a very diverse ecosystem and is generally a very beautiful place albeit dangerous. The wildlife there varies greatly all the way from seahorses to fishes to sea anemones, jellyfishes, octopuses and most other types of sea creatures you can think of.
The Marianna trench was first measured using a rope of all things LOL that was weighted in 1875 which recorded a depth of over 8000 metres ( thats a pretty long rope) and then in 1899 the USS Nero, with a converted coiler(a measurement device on the ship) measured over 9000 metres and after several other measurements, in 1984 the Japanese vessel the Tayuko measured a depth of almost 11000 metres (10,920 to be exact) this deepest area of the marriana trench is known as Challengers Deep. The Marriana trench is one of the several mysterious and amazing places found on our beatiful planet. And i will be writing about more places later on so look forward to it. Thank you very much.
