Soon, the house was flooded with well-meaning neighbours who wanted to find out what was wrong with Oriaku. She hurriedly led them to her room where Ada was lying almost lifeless with some trickle of blood dropping from her head to the tiled floor.
"Oriaku, what is this? What happened here?", asked Papa Ego who lives in one of the apartments upstairs.
"I don't know o", Oriaku stammered amidst sobs.
"What do you mean, 'you don't know'?", Stanley, who just joined them asked.
"It's the work of the devil o. I only wanted to wake her up; I didn't mean for it to be like this o", Oriaku cried as she waved her hands frantically.
They gently carried Ada outside and they noticed that she was barely breathing. Mama Ego ran to the nearby tap and collected some water which she poured on Ada. Ada woke up immediately and looked at everybody there with a searching look. She didn't know why people gathered round her like this?
Oriaku rushed towards her, held her in her hands and started weeping. Ada looked at Oriaku, her aunt and remembered sleeping off in her room but didn't know what happened afterwards.
"What is happening, ma?", she asked her aunt. "Why is everybody looking at me like this?"
"I'm so sorry for how I treated you earlier. I promise never to do that ever again", Oriaku said to Ada, tears running down her cheeks. How could she have explained to everyone in the village how she lost Ada due to her reckless behaviour.
Oge walked in through the gate and saw everyone gathered in front of Oriaku's apartment. She walked up to them and asked what the matter was. Stanley narrated everything that has happened to her. Oge walked to Oriaku and called her aside.
"Are you falling for this childish trap?", she asked Oriaku. "This girl is just fooling you"
"Oge, I don't want to ever see you in my apartment again. Anything that happens in my house is not your business. Please, I beg you, keep to yourself except it is unavoidable. I don't need your bad advises anymore. See how you almost led me to kill an innocent girl who only came here to assist me?", Oriaku shouted at Oge without minding everybody glancing towards them.
After that incident, Oriaku treated Ada like her own child while Ada did her best to please her aunt. Ada was introduced to Oriaku's husband when he got back from work that day. Clothes and toiletries were bought for Ada and she was given a decent room to stay in their house.
Oriaku learnt her lesson the hard way. House helps, relatives and wards staying with you should be treated fairly without discrimination. Mind the persons you take advise from because some are out to pull you down, not help you.
Thanks for taking your time to read this short story and I hope you learnt from it.
