Hello friends of the community @hive-140084, Today I wanted to talk to you about one of the women who has probably saved the most lives in the history of humanity, Gertrude Belle Elion. These are the type of heroines we need in our society.
Gertrude Belle Elion was born in New York on January 23, 1918. She had a long life that ended at age 81 when she died of natural causes. She dedicated her entire life to medicine and that earned her the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1988.
She was a very intelligent young woman but she opted for medicine and cancer studies because her grandfather suffered from this disease. She studied and graduated from New York University. She had many difficulties studying and then working in her early years but everything changed for her when the Second World War broke out and many men had to go to the front. That opened doors for her and many other women of the time.
Gertrude knew how to take advantage of her opportunity. She created a multitude of anti-cancer drugs and others that made organ transplantation possible. The medications against childhood leukemia stand out, which went from being a fatal disease to a survival rate of 80%. She had a long career with many successes that today benefit humanity as a whole.
