Hello friends of the community @hive-140084, today I want to talk about a very little-known woman but who was present in a very well-known story.
Artemisia I of Caria was queen of a Greek city state in the ancient region of Caria, where Turkey is located today. She fought allied with the Persian Empire against the Greek city states led by Athens.
She participated in the famous Battle of Salamis in 480 BC. where she was the only female commander in the army of Xerxes I. This leadership is what makes her notable in history because she played a prominent role in the political and military sphere that was dominated by men.
She was a queen who ruled with a firm hand and intelligence, preserving her people in a very turbulent time in history. And although she was Greek she allied herself with Xerxes I to guarantee the survival of her people. And contrary to what it may seem, she was also highly respected and at the same time admired by the Greek city states.
We know all this from the writings of the Greek historian Herodotus.
For those who like fiction cinema more than history, you can see this extraordinary woman represented by Eva Green in the movie 300. Maybe that sounds more familiar to some.
