The beginning of June has always been significant in my life, for several reasons.
The 2nd is my birthday.
...that is also the most famous Italian National Holiday, i.e. the Italian National Republic Day.
The beginning of June corresponds to the first Summer breeze, and to the very first moments of relaxed vibes and long days with sunny mood.
However, this year the beginning of June to me meant something else. I was not in the mood for sunny aperitifs and the beach, long days with sunny vibes or any leaving for early weekends off.
I was just not in the mood.
When you've got a pain that is not visible is just so much harder to get through life, and it's very annoying when the pain you're living happens, by coincidence, to occur on the days of your birthday, the days of your favorite moments of the year. It sucks, I gotta say.
However, those moments are the ones where real friends show themselves. And so it went for me. My fried and colleague Massimiliano, aware of what I was living and suffering inside for a month already, invited me over to spend a long weekend at his beach house in Calbaria. I wasn't sure I wanted to go, I had to think about it. Fortunately, he said about this weekend weeks before the departure, so I had plenty of time to think about it.
Certain moments I didn't wanna leave, others I would just think that would have been the best weekend ever... still I was undecided until the very last second.
I knew I was not in the right mood and the idea of sharing a full weekend off at a friend's house, also with a couple of people I didn't know, didn't really seem to me to be the best idea of spending my birthday and the days off. My main concern was running the risk of ruining the weekend to the others, especially I was concerned because I didn't know two of the people invited by Massimiliano.
At this point, I think you guessed that I ended up going! We left on the 1st of June, after I pre-celebrated my birthday with my parents at dinner. Max came down my place with his girlfriend Irene and his friend Lorenzo and we headed to Coccorino, the little town in province of Vibo Valentia where Massimiliano has his family's beach house. It was such a long drive! Around midnight, we stopped at a gas station and while I was basically deeply sleeping, they went to the cafè shop, got something for the rest of the drive and bought me... a gift! Hahah they were so cute! They got me a peluche of a gorilla, which I named Jimmy, and a sweety "frolla", a sweet snack typical of Naples area (indeed, we were passing it by then). I felt so lucky and happy, I didn't expect this little gift at all! It meant a lot to me, just because no one else got me anything like it before for my birthday! I have to say, that was the weirdest way to celebrate my birthday hahah
We arrived home so late that was to be considered pretty early... around 5am (from Rome, it took us almost 7 hours and half!). We slept 6 hours roughly and when we woke up I couldn't believe where we were! We headed to Capo Vaticano, the very famous spot in Calabria where they produce the famous "Amaro del Capo", the tonic liquid very loved by Italians. The beach is outstanding, the water is so clean, the landscape beautiful and the whether was just perfect. I took off my stand-up-paddle board and went immediately for a tour around the coast. I saw the most magnificent places I've ever seen. I am just sorry I didn't bring any camera with me on the first day I went paddling... but you'll get a glance of what it looks like from my pictures here.
Massimiliano is a real friend: sometimes we argue because we just tend to have different opinions on many things, but at the end of they day he's such a good person and very good friend. He deserved a little bit of relax on the shore after that previous night' long drive!
I wanted the others to try my sup board and so Lorenzo and my new friend Veronica went around and I took the occasion to take some shots! The light was so beautiful because the sun was not very high anymore and there was enough soft contrast between light and shade.
It was quite full of people but the atmosphere was just great. There was some tourists, mostly locals, that were taking advantage of the long weekend off, thanks to the National Holiday, June 2nd. I used to think, when I was a kid, that it was National holiday because of my birthday, and that was simply amazing to me! Everybody could take a day off just because of my birthday!
Luckily enough, I enjoy taking pictures of people enough not to get bored of it. However, I prefer when people look natural as opposed as in pose: I just love when everything is exactly as it is, without any filter or fake position imposed by someone... what do you think about this?
Do you prefer constructed or natural photos?
Finally, Lorenzo's moment was over! Massimiliano took my board and went in the sea to try it... it seems strange but no one could really stand the first time. It's just very unbalanced and it takes a while to get used to it, especially if you've never tried anything like it before. For instances, if you tried surfing before, this kind of board should be good for you and you should be able to stand a little bit, paddling may be softly and slowly.
But it's never a problem not to be able to stand! You can always lay on your knees, and paddle from that position. It's pretty uncomfortable and in short you will start feeling your quads very sore and you'll have pain in your ankles and foot fingers... but it's ok if you want to just paddle for a few minutes. I recommend instead, if you want to paddle for long times, to stand instead of staying on your knees, because otherwise you will get blisters all over your feet.
The day, my birthday, was coming to and end and Massimilian just cared a lot about showing us the best spot where to admire the sunset... so we left Capo Vaticano beach and headed to a new place... not far from there...
My friends drove us to a place that is incredible to be really on Earth. I swear these pictures of mine do not give any justice to the reality of beauty that it was in front of us. I felt, for a moment, just in peace with the universe, with myself, with the people around me and with the person that broke my heart and because of whom I was suffering, and still am today.
That was the spot where you could see all the Eolie Islands, part of Sicily, aligned and sparlings at sunset. The volcano island is Stromboli, still an active volcano today, visible from the cloud that comes out from the crater.
The golden hour finally came over us and saved our souls, calming then down, making us taste the beauty, joy, and full happiness of life. I felt grateful for being there, for having good people surrounding me and thanks to whom I was there in that moment. There was nothing else I wanted to do or nowhere I wanted to me on that day, my birthday.
I want you to enjoy these pictures and try to think of what it could have been like to stay in front of such a natural gig.

Un paradiso chiamato "Calabria"
giorno 1
E così è andata per me.
