Just yesterday I was chatting with my friend about brand worth, mostly the difference of brand worth between products sold in stores and products from MLM selling as she does sales for an MLM cosmetic brand. Talking about brands made me wonder how it all came to be and if there are brands in the olden days, centuries ago.

Of course there are, take Shakespeare for example. He is not only a witter, or a director, he was so famous for the plays he produced that people will fill in his theater whenever he has a play. It was a brand. People will come to see the play because Shakespeare produced it. Meanwhile in the east, brands came from food. Till now, when you go to China you might have people telling you to buy dumplings from a certain town or city. Some family owned restaurants are even dated centuries back. On a darker note, prostitution houses were famous in the olden days and people would say "You have to see this girl from xxx house" . The 'house' refers to the brand, every big city would have a few of these places and they compete with each other like how cosmetic brands compete with each other nowadays.

However, branding a product only happened around a century ago when printing and logo making are invented. Truth be told, I'm unsure of whether having brands do more good or harm to the society. In the end, it is all up to us to fall into the branding trap or not.

This is word vomit, truly. Working in a marketing company, I knew too much about brands that I cant even write a proper one on it, the irony.
