We have been growing our own strawberries this year but have yielded only a few small ones. At this time of year, there are only a few to come and the photo below shows one flowering in our garden at the moment. They have been crowded out by our abundant raspberry crop that I blogged about yesterday. The photo above shows the strawberries we bought at the market as we love to eat strawberries for dessert during the summer.
We like to make strawberry jam from frozen strawberries as they can be bulk bought cheaply. We also like to add frozen strawberries to our smoothies. When making strawberry jelly, we add chopped strawberries to the mix and then serve with cream for a real treat 🍓.
Strawberries contain high levels of vitamin C, folate (vitamin B9), manganese and potassium. They also contain iron, magnesium, copper, phosphorus, vitamins B6, E and K.
The fruit is reputed to improve heart health by lowering cholesterol and blood pressure, reduce blood sugar levels and inflammation and decrease the risk of cancer.
We shall plant some more strawberry plants next spring in a sunnier spot in our garden, @fleur 🍓
