Today I pulled all the freeze damaged, mushy beaned, and mushy leaved bean plants from the garden. The sheep now have a big line of nibblins lining their fence line. (That's a lot of lines!) They were the excited benefactors of my morning trip to town to get grain so now have a nice selection of food.
The beans are all super sad looking and also loaded with beans that I should have harvested. This year my focus shifted rapidly from the garden to the trees and I am positive it was an okay decision. I lost about $300-500 worth of sales on my beans, but I cut down 3 trees that would have combined cost me $5k or more. By #diy I saved us a large amount of money and got EXTREMELY, SUPER DUPER valuable experience in tree climbing.
I had been hoping to use the beans for dry beans, but as life would be the day of the freeze was when WHAT DID YOU DO YESTERDAY? happened and I was so stoked from the day, and sooooo tired, that I forgot to cover the garden. Everything froze HARD and the season took a giant shit.
It took 3 loads drug across the yard before they were all out. Thankfully it is only about 40 to 50 meters so doesn't hurt too bad. Now I just have to finish the last cleanup of the tomatoes and other squash, then the plastic will get folded and irrigation rolled before the freeze sets in for winter.
