I was the “Flower of the Week" girl for a few years in my early 20’s. Each Monday I would go to a shop called “The Flower Lady” and pick up a big heavy shopping cart type of thing that had 2 layers of grids in it.
Vases filled with water, “The Flower of the Week” plus some type of greenery, would already be loaded, and I would walk a route all over the downtown area delivering flowers to people who would keep them on their desk all week.
I went to the courthouse, City Hall, office buildings, stores, a few homes, and where ever else people where getting these sent or delivered. I had extra flowers and tried to convince more people to get my weekly delivery as I went along.
As I delivered, I would get cash from the lucky flower recipient, and pick up last week’s vase.
This was a hard job.
- I was in the heat and sun of South Florida
- I was fat and sweaty (the fat "Flower of the Week" girl, someone once said.)
- The cart alone was heavy. It was really heavy with all the water and flowers first thing in the morning.
- People did not always want to pay
- People said last week’s flower died too soon
- People did not like this week’s flower
- The flowers might blow away in the wind - like a horror movie
- Cars might try to hit me
- Random people might steal my flowers if they could get away with it.
- One of the other “Flower of the Week” girls might not show up and I would have to go out a second time on a route I was unfamiliar with.
- The cart might tip over on a curb and spill flowers so I would have to go back to the shop and get more and keep going.
- The doors of buildings were very heavy and awkward for the cart to get in
- Elevators of buildings were hard to negotiate
At the end of the day – however long that took, I would get tax-free cash of half of whatever I had taken in that day. I was also doing bookkeeping all over town in other random jobs and this flower thing was the most lucrative of all my work.
I was the most reliable flower girl the flower lady ever had. She was very sad to see me go when I ended up getting a full-time job in my mid-twenties. I was sorry to lose that Monday cash, but not sad at all to stop doing that job.
Oh yeah – carnations were the Flower of the Week every so often. Most people did not like them, and preferred more exotic flowers.
