Just thought I would share some images of the place I have been calling home these last 8 months. The Tiwi Islands, located about 80km north of Darwin, Northern Territory Australia is a pair of islands Melville and Bathurst. Bathurst is the smaller of the two and Melville is Australia's second largest Island.
You can get here by ferry (about 2.5 hours) or by plane (20mins) and the fishing up here is amazing. I have caught several species and look to catch a lot more before my time here ends. I am currently about to head out for a full weekend fishing trip with 2 mates so wish me luck!
The people that traditionally own this land are the tiwi people. They have lived here long before white settlement of Australia. They are an Indigenous people to Australia. They speak Tiwi and some english. over the years a pigieon Tiwi/English has developed.
The landscape here is ever changing with the seasons. wet season sees endless rains and lots of tall grass and trees. The dry season sees the grasses dry up and eventually get burnt off by local Tiwi people who traditionally burn off to help hunt traditional food such as wallaby, pussum, pig and buffalo.
I have included several pictures in this post of my time here so far. some are camping, some fishing, some just random shots around town. I am a teacher here on the island and I have been lucky to meet these awesome people.
