the steemit subreddit seems to be lost to spam. I think it might be best if we make a few stickies at the top and have them link to r/steem and we use that instead..

Agreed! The long term plan of SteemEngine will be to keep linking into other social platforms. The more Steemit links that make it into the widestream social media platforms the faster adoption will happen.
