We have, for the last couple of years, partly because of the big C and L, and primarily because of a non-existent budget, not ventured out to indulge very often. This weekend, not only have I given myself permission to do some of the things I want to do, but we decided, to hell with everything, and...well, you know that not very politically correct expression...gave the cat a canary.
Less than 500m down the road is Green Gables, a village establishment that has many stories to tell. The current owners - the third in 15 or so years we've been in, or associated with, the village. In each instance, the owners have been widowed during their tenure. Including now. She had a fall, hit her head and died of a brain heamorrhage, leaving a widower and two daughters - then under 12. That was about four years ago, and it's been a long journey. With a new beginning.
So, last night, we went to the now not so new, new kid on the block and with the most spectacular sundowner view of the village.
Last year, some time, Sarel, the owner, entered a competition for a restaurant revamp. And won! The work and the filming happened in February, and having hosted some of the crew involved in the revamp through Destination McGregor, we have long been wanting to drop in.
Last night was the night. What a treat!
Frida's is named not just for Frida Kahlo, and the decor reflects her eclectic style, but also in honour of Suné. Kahlo was her favourite artist. The offering is simple: tapas i.e. small plates. And pretty.
Mikah, the younger of the two daughters (Khati is away) joyjully skipped her way between the tables, bringing light - literally and figuratively. It was wonderful hearing Sarel's distinctive laugh and enjoying his sense of humour. Soul food.
And then the platter for two.
It disappointed in nothing: the flavours nor the prettiness of the small plates.
It's great value for money, in a lovely ambience and with lots of village banter. The episode of the series In die Sop - Die evolusie has yet to air - probably in about three weeks' time, but Sarel and some of his staff do feature in the trailer.
What we enjoyed last evening suggests that it and he will be a roaring success. We wish Sarel and the girls every success in this new chapter. And, of course, we'll be back. They're neighbours but one, after all!
Until next time, be well
