At age 61 I continue my journey toward becoming a polyglot. I can now sound like a highly educated person in my mother tongue and muddle along in German (though I'm pretty good at singing in German.) I can also sound like a complete idiot in several other languages, some better than others.
Seriously, though, I can follow knitting patterns and prayers in almost any Germanic language. I could probably also make it to a train station or hotel and order something to eat, as well as find a restroom. Time to set a few intermediate goals now:
- I'd like to be able to follow a TV series in German without subtitles. I'm getting better, but not quite there yet.
- I should learn to handle Spanish in more than just a sewing workshop environment. Right now I can talk a little about hemming a wedding gown, but not much else.
- I'd like to listen to an Italian opera and have some idea what is going on.
As of yesterday, Dutch has passed Greek on my leaderboard below. This was inevitable, since Dutch is my 4th Germanic language while Greek requires learning a different alphabet--one I have previously used only in math and science. Spanish is likewise gaining on Russian.
