I was telling you about our frustration for missing Boston in favor of Niagara Falls. Well, on that same trip, while in Buffalo and after visiting the falls, I proposed to my wife to go to Toronto in Canada. She said yes and we headed for the border in the rental car. There was a risk of invalidating the car insurance in case of any mishap, but we thought it was worth it. Once at Canadian immigration, I don't know if it was because of nerves, I remembered that I had read about the visa requirement for Venezuelans (it was the year 2000).
We have always been law-abiding and this forced us to ask the official if we could pass (even though he had already stamped our approval). The guy checked and agreed with me...so we were sent back to the U.S. Of course, that thwarted our sudden and unplanned visit to Toronto, but we had no regrets since the law comes first. And it is the same recommended for those venturing overseas: always, I repeat, always take care to be legal in the country you are visiting. Many bad things can happen if you cross borders illegally.

Anecdotally, the Toronto Blue Jays had a record of 89 wins and 73 losses, which earned them third place in the American League East division. It was a nervous wreck to advance to the postseason, as they were left with the last available spot. Such effort was insufficient because they lost in a couple of games against the eventual world champions: the Texas Rangers. As we have described, this is the most hard-fought division in baseball and one of the most difficult to predict given the quality of the players who play in it. Toronto possesses one of the most talented lineups in the majors.
If you don't believe it, just take a look at last season's numbers. The Blue Jays' collective offense hit for an above-average .256 AVE and ranked eighth out of 30 franchises. The pitching fared much better, pitching for an AVE of 3.78 and ranking fourth out of 30 rosters. And how could that not be the case when the team has focused on having good farms in the minors, in order to be able to pick and choose when they want. Check out the last names on their roster: Guerrero, Bichette, Biggio, among others. Many are sons of retired stars of the major circus.
Nos leemos por all铆.

There is only one Venezuelan on Toronto's rosters and he is invited to training camp on a minor league contract: Eduardo Escobar. A veteran of 13 seasons, he doesn't have much to prove. Just his good form and a lucky run to earn a spot in the infield. It would seem his career is already on the decline as he has a .226 AVE line, 6 homers and 31 RBIs last year in 288 innings. In spring training he's had 35 at-bats with 4 hits and a homer for an AVE of .114. It's hard to predict if he'll stay up with the team, although a timely bat like him is always needed. The guy may not hit for average, but when he does hit the ball, he hits it at pressing times.
Manager John Schneider and management moved in the winter to plug holes. Escobar's case is one, because they don't have a natural third baseman they trust. Spending two seasons with Toronto worked in his favor, but he has more to prove. If the Blue Jays can maintain and improve on last year's collective performance, I see them fighting for the division's top spot with the Baltimore Orioles and Tampa Bay Rays. We'll read you over there.
