En efecto, algo de lo que jamás he hablado acá en HIVE es mi historia con la contabilidad. Cuando terminé la secundaria no quería seguir la universidad, me parecía un desperdicio de tiempo estudiar cinco años, teniendo la oportunidad cercana de un empleo formal y seguro. Así las cosas, mi primer encuentro con la economía formal fue un curso de contaduría que hicimos en el Instituto Contable, famosa institución ubicada en el centro de Caracas. No sé si existe todavía.
Have you, my dear reader, ever taken stock of your year? Let's just say that we are used to it. It has to do with the blessed accountant's bug. When I finished high school I didn't want to go to college, it seemed like a waste of time to study for five years, having the opportunity of a formal and secure job nearby. De no ser así, no habría podido enfrentar el desafío que significaba un trabajo en una empresa de distribución de productos de consumo masivo. A la larga, me hice el preferido del jefe de contabilidad por nuestra acuciosa y militar manera de llevar los registros. El debe, haber, saldo, se instaló en nuestra psiquis como la solución a todo. Por supuesto, luego aprendería las triquiñuelas que hacen las empresas para bajar sus impuestos, pero con esa disciplina fue amor a primera vista.
I use the nickname famous because the truth was that the graduates from there were well educated. They were accountants without a higher education degree. Otherwise, I would not have been able to face the challenge of a job in an FMCG distribution company. Eventually, I became the chief accountant's favorite because of our meticulous and military record-keeping. The must, have, balance, was installed in our psyche as the solution to everything. En un giro de las cosas, una hermana mía trabajó para una firma contable (todos mis hermanos son contadores públicos, menos el menor que es abogado y éste servidor que es ingeniero de sistemas) y uno de sus jefes le enseñó la magia de hacer un balance personal a final de cada año, con el fin de revisar las metas que se había propuesto a principios de ese período y que se encontraba a punto de culminar. No haremos algo tan detallado porque muchas de las experiencias vividas por vez primera fueron tratadas en ésta publicación, entonces, hablemos de otras no referidas.
In a twist of things, a sister of mine worked for an accounting firm (all my siblings are CPAs, except the youngest who is a lawyer, and this one who is a systems engineer) and one of her bosses taught her the magic of doing a personal balance sheet at the end of each year, to review the goals she had set at the beginning of that period and was about to finish. We won't go into too much detail because many of the first-time experiences were covered in this publication, so let's talk about others not mentioned.
Una de las metas que nos impusimos fue cerrar este año con 36.000 Hive Power (HP), y por más que lo intentamos, apenas pudimos subir 4.500 HP desde la cifra que poseíamos a inicio de éste año. Esto se debió a varias razones: la más importante de ellas fue que preferimos colocar tokens convertidos en HBD en la cartera de ahorros, los cuales están pagando un 20% APR. Ningún banco en la bolita del mundo paga esa cantidad de interés y mucho menos con la economía tal como se encuentra. Si convertimos esos HBD a HIVE, entonces serían unos 8.900 HIVE. Sumados a lo que poseemos en stake, llegaríamos a unos 31.300 HIVE aproximadamente, todavía un poco lejos de la meta.

Otra de las metas que nos pusimos al principio de año fue conocer a muchos otros hivers que no habíamos tenido la fortuna de ver personalmente. Es decir, pueden pasar años en el mundo virtual sin conocer alguien con quien compartes espacios. Y quería remediar eso. Es la mejor manera de tumbar preconceptos y juicios sobre vuestro talante. Tal meta la cumplimos sobradamente. No solo logramos conocer a muchos hivers, sino que logramos descontaminar las relaciones personales mediante el compartir más cercanamente con algunos. Estoy seguro que muchos de ellos cambiaron su percepción de éste servidor tanto como la mía cambió sobre ellos.
Another goal we set at the beginning of the year was to meet many other hivers that we had not been fortunate enough to see in person. Years can go by in the virtual world without meeting someone with whom you share spaces. And I wanted to remedy that. It's the best way to knock down preconceptions and judgments about your character. We more than accomplished that goal. Not only did we get to meet many hivers, but we managed to decontaminate personal relationships by sharing more closely with some of them. I am sure that many of them changed their perception of this server as much as mine changed about them.
Haber tenido la fortuna de poder compartir con mis hijos allende las fronteras nacionales, es una bendición. Sobre todo porque no teníamos planificado volar a Buenos Aires. Queríamos regresar del viaje a Venezuela con ahorros. Pero tales planes no pudieron cumplirse al comprar pasajes a la Argentina. Teníamos cuatro años sin ver a nuestro hijo menor y al final dejamos que la salud financiera pasara a un rol secundario para que protagonizara el amor de padre y madre. El futuro dirá si fue algo acertado, pero, aquí y ahora, creemos que fue una bendición hacer el sacrificio.
To have had the fortune of being able to share with my children beyond the national borders is a blessing. Especially because we had not planned to fly to Buenos Aires. We wanted to return from the trip to Venezuela with savings. But such plans could not be fulfilled when we bought tickets to Argentina. We had not seen our youngest son for four years and in the end, we let financial health take a back seat to the love of father and mother. The future will tell if it was the right thing to do, but, here and now, we believe it was a blessing to make the sacrifice.
Otra de las metas no cumplidas fue el regreso a la piscina. Este es un pendiente increíblemente necesario. Ya mi cuerpo empieza a pasar factura por el descuido. Espero poder cumplir con ello el año que está a poco de comenzar. Consolidar

Es muy probable que existan metas que me faltan por cubrir en este balance, pero las más importantes han sido tomadas en cuenta.
