There were snakes in the old stone place, but the grass grew so green you could only see the slithering bastards when the moved. Ma said they weren't dangerous.
"The green ones are fine, they ain't gonna kill ya if they bite ya?" she said, as she wiped down the surface of the kitchen table. She never seemed to be able to stand still. She was always cleaning, moving things, cooking or tidying. I read once that if sharks stop moving they die. I wondered if the same went for Ma.
She reminded me of a shark, in more ways than one.
"How do you know the ones that are safe and the ones that will kill you, Ma?" I asked.
"Well, son," she said. "If you get bitten by a snake and you are still alive after an hour or so, you should be fine."
"And if not?"
"If not, you'd be dead and nothing matters, then." She smiled, her front teeth were missing and it made her look like a witch, Fran said.
Not that Fran ever said that when Ma was around. Fran was as scared as the old woman as I was.

"Caller, are you there?" Suddenly, another voice came on the line. "You are going to regret this, boy!" the voice hissed, reminding me of Ma's snakes.
I slammed the receiver down and looked at Fran.
"Shit," she said. "What was that?"
I bit my lips. "Do you think they know who we are?"
Fran shook her head. "We weren't on for long enough. They can't trace the calls." It was the Eighties. They didn't even have caller id round our way then. "But I think they might be on to us."
We'd been prank calling the Gethers, from up the road for a few weeks now. We hated the Gethers. Every summer when we were sent down to stay with Ma, we would beg our parents not to.
"But you love to spend time with your cousin," my mother would say. "And Ma loves to have you there too."
Fran told me her mother would say the same thing to her. We did like each other, Fran and I.
It was everyone else we were scared of.

The Gethers were an odd couple. Ma said there was nothing wrong with them, and folks should leave them alone.
Fran and I thought they were serial killers.
"I bet they keep children prisoner in their cellar," Fran said, staring up at the old farmhouse. "They probably carve bits of flesh off of their arms and legs whilst they're still alive. They like the meat fresh."
Sometimes Fran scared me.
She had a vivid imagination, and she had a way of getting her thoughts into my head. Into my dreams.
We started pranking the Gethers after they caught us sneaking around their property, looking in the windows of the barn, trying to find their captives. Old man Gether pointed his rifle at my head and told me to, "fuck off, boy!".
His wife - or sister, as Fran said she thought she was - held an axe and started limping in Fran's direction, her axe held high.
"I'm coming for you girl!" she said. She had a cold and the words came out funny. We laughed about it later, putting on the voice, pretending we weren't scared shitless.
