"Education is the best legacy a parent can give a child."This is a saying that I have heard since I was little and growing up into an adult, I can tell you this is right and one of the things that made me study more and want to improve myself was the assignment and exams that were set for me.
As someone who has experienced the education system both as a student and a teacher, I have often asked this same question of whether kids in school should be given homework. At first, it was just more work for me as a student because I should be resting and having fun at home and as a teacher, it feels like extra work.
Homework has been a longstanding tradition in the education system, serving as a way to making sure learning, practice skills, and improvement take place outside the school environment. But what if we were to shake things up and do away with homework altogether? In the Nigerian educational system, homework has always been one of the important parts of learning. It provides students with the opportunity to review and apply what they have learned in class, helping to deepen their understanding of the subjects. Homework also teaches valuable skills such as time management, discipline, and independent study habits—all of which are crucial for success in school and beyond.
Imagine a world where students are not burdened with the stress of completing assignments at home. Many students would be happy because they won't have to worry about more school problems when they get home but would they be able to immerse themselves in studying in school alone? Too much of everything is not good and school isn't a place for learning alone, it's also a place for fun.
However, giving students homework is to make sure they don't waste all the free time they have to just play the same way they play in school; it's to help them understand that when they get home, they also need to study. Homework also allows teachers to assess student understanding and provide targeted support where needed. As a teacher, I'm able to understand the strengths and weaknesses of my students, which helps me understand the place I'm to focus more on when teaching them.
This is why I always tell parents not to do the kids' homework for them. In my country's educational system, exams and assessments play a significant role in determining students' academic success, and homework serves as a valuable tool for preparation. The grading system also allows students to be competitive. making them want to better themselves academically. I was always taking the last position in class but I didn't like that so I improved myself.
In conclusion, while the idea of canceling homework may seem pleasing for the student, we should always remember the importance it holds in our learning system. It would be a very bad idea to cancel it and I won't be pleased if I don't know how my child is doing academically when they don't have homework.
