The global advancement has changed lots of things in the society and the world at large. Presently, Mobile phones or smart phones and social media have constitutes or fills big vacuum in the lives of the people. I used to call this generation jazzy meaning every kid want to be among and enjoy all the privileges adults are enjoying. There are different motives that makes most kids go for smartphones and creation of social media handles. The fear of parents always remains whether these kids are ready or not.
There are kids that are fortunate to raised from a good background where most amenities are within their reach whereas there are other categories whose parents can't afford it and couldn't expose their wards to it.
There are varied reasons why kids delve into using smartphones and social media platforms. I'll share more light on this. The degree to which parents are exposed determines how quick and sharp their response to these facilities would be. For instance during my days, there wasn't introduction of mobile phones yet and in those late 80s and early 90s none of my parents had a computer or conventional education. Our school then had only one desk computer donated by a prominent politician.
I have three children while two are already in primary school. My oldest son is 5years now but I can assure you he can turn on the computer, input the password and maneuver it the way he wants. We had to even drop our second android phone with them to watch cartoons and other games. The level of their exposure is far than what happened a decade ago. Should my kid be allowed to own a phone now and social media account?
few reasons why kids want smartphones;
- They would want to play games and get fun. I remembered my late uncle's son, in less than ten years he could even surf through the Internet and navigate through lots of portals.
- Kids delve into social media because they want to stay connected and explore more friendship.
- smartphones has gradually become a substitute for computers. Since many can't afford computer, they opt for smartphones which could serve multipurpose functions.
what age should children to own smartphone and social media?
The age for kids to have their smartphones and social media accounts depends on their needs and maturity however most social media peg it at 13years. Can your child manipulate phone and surf the Internet? Does the child need it?Is the parent ready to monitor it? Set boundaries and educate them properly.
Age attached to the use of smartphone shouldn't be a challenge as far as I am concerned because of environment is not the same so also our family background.
The rate at which children grow in this generation is quite amazing compared to how it used to be. A sixteen old child of today looks like someone that is above twenty in those days. We are in the 21st century where more advances of technology is on the increase every day.
Kids less than 12years should be properly monitored and clear boundaries set if they want to use the smartphone while for social media openings should be at least 15years above. Recently I was shocked when I saw a small girl of less than 12 years having huge followers of millions in her social media handle. I would advise that parents should keep a watch at her.
