Kleines Nachtpfauenauge │ Small emperor moth

Saturnia pavonia (Linnaeus, 1758)

The small emperor moth is a moth from the family of Saturniidae. The moth can be found on nutrient-poor grassland and in heathlands with a high proportion of rose plants. The moth hatches at the beginning of April. During the day the male flies frantically through the vegetation in search of a female. The female is nocturnal and sits during the day on stalks or bushes. After the copula, the female lays her eggs in a ring on thin branches. The caterpillars hatch after about a week and feed on the fresh leaves of the food plant.

In order for a male to find a female, the female secretes a pheromone that the male receives. In contrast to the female, the male has fan-shaped feelers with which he can perceive the attractant from a great distance. The male flies directly to a newly hatched female to reproduce.

After reproduction, the moth only lives for about a week and does not eat any food as an imago. Its mouth parts are not developed for food intake. Only the caterpillar eats and can be observed from May onwards. Young caterpillars live sociably and are easy to identify. Every year I can observe both eggs and caterpillars on blackthorn. The butterfly flies in spring in one generation. Its population is currently considered not endangered.
