Ask any Australian what makes a good day and there's a fair chance food will come into it somewhere. Eating together is one of our great passions. A long lunch that runs into the afternoon, a barbecue with the neighbours, a Sunday roast with whoever turns up. And somewhere in the middle of it all, there's usually a coffee.

We take our coffee seriously in this country. We'll argue about it, travel across town for it, and judge a café by it before we've even looked at the menu. So when a coffee genuinely surprises you, it's worth talking about.
This week it was a cold brew. Smooth, cool and gently sweet, with notes of orange and chocolate that came through the more you sipped. It was the kind of drink you slow down for.

Alongside it came a prawn pasta with just a hint of spice. Not enough to take over, just enough to keep you interested. Then a basket of crusty, home-baked sourdough with proper butter, the sort of bread that disappears faster than anyone admits to eating it.
By the end, the table told its own story. Empty cups, a few crumbs, a smear of butter on the plate. There's something almost artistic about what's left behind after a good meal. It's the sign that people enjoyed themselves.

Because that's the real point. A meal is never just about the food. It's about pulling up a chair, passing the bread, and taking the time to enjoy each other's company. The coffee and the pasta were wonderful, but the conversation is what we'll remember.

So next time you sit down to eat, put the phone away, pour something good and linger a little longer. The best meals are the ones we share.
