To understand the answer of your question you have to remember the Theory of Natural Selection of Charles Darwin . Thinking for won profits is not a new thing. Every animal including human should think about their won existence first & then think for the world. If you don't care about yourself you'll extinct by time from the Nature. Similarly applicable for society also, if you don't think about yourself and don't keep the growth of your earnings stable, in a result most of the things'll be ruined from your life and you'll loose your influence over the society.
